Zener Diode Voltage Regulator: Principles and Operation

Technology2.89 KB

Zener Diode as a Voltage Regulator

The function of a regulator is to provide a constant output voltage to a load connected in parallel with it, despite ripples in the supply voltage or variations in the load current. The Zener diode continues to regulate the voltage until the diode's current falls below the minimum IZ(min) value in the reverse breakdown region.

It permits current to flow in the forward direction as normal, but also allows it to flow in the reverse direction when the voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage, known as the Zener voltage. The Zener diode is specifically manufactured to have a reverse voltage breakdown at a precise level. In breakdown, the voltage across the Zener diode remains nearly constant over a wide range of currents,...

The Science of Plastics: Properties, Types, and Recycling

Technology4.23 KB

What Are Plastics? Origin and Composition

Plastics originate from fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas). They were formed millions of years ago by the decomposition of organic matter. The main chemical elements composing plastics are carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.

Properties of Plastics

  • Lightweight
  • Impermeable and waterproof
  • Thermal insulator
  • Electrical insulator
  • Corrosion resistant
  • Resistant to many chemical substances
  • Easily formable/moldable
  • Tough (not so fragile)
  • Little resistance to strain (low tensile strength)
  • Photodegradable (in some types)

Advantages of Plastics

  • As they are lightweight, significant energy is saved in the transport of plastic objects or products packaged in plastics.
  • Having a low melting point means less energy is consumed during the

Simple Machines and Mechanical Principles Explained

Technology2.61 KB

1. Machines and Mechanisms

A machine is a device capable of reducing the effort required to conduct a task. Mechanisms are groups of mechanical elements, each of which performs a specific function or task within the machine. Machines can be classified as follows:

  • Simple machines: Devices that only have one support point.
  • Complex machines: Systems formed by two or more fundamental simple machines.

Law of Simple Machines

In a simple machine, the work done by the driving forces equals the work done by the resisting forces.

2. Lever

The lever is a simple machine consisting of a rigid rod that can rotate around a support point or fulcrum. The following components can be distinguished in a lever:

  • Power
  • Resistance
  • Power arm
  • Resistance arm

Law of the Lever

The...

Helices and Threads: Fundamental Concepts

A helix is a curve of indefinite length that rotates around the axis of a cylinder, advancing a uniform distance for each rotation. If external, it forms a screw; if internal, it forms a nut.

Generation of Threads

Threads are generated by creating a helical groove on a cylindrical or conical surface.

Classification of Threads

By Number of Starts

  • Single-Start: Has a single helix.
  • Multi-Start: Has two or more helices.

By Position

  • External: Found on screws.
  • Internal: Found in nuts.

By Hand of Helix

  • Right-Hand Thread
  • Left-Hand Thread

By Thread Profile

  • Triangular Thread

Features triangular-shaped flanks, commonly used for fasteners like nuts and bolts.

  • Square Thread

Used in applications requiring high power transmission,

Technology, Materials, and Processes: A Comprehensive Look

Technology3.48 KB

Technology, Materials, and Processes

Technology seeks to meet human needs by creating artificial objects. It involves the study of materials, technical skills, and work organization.

Materials are consumed in a process. They are used once and then depleted.

Tools are not consumed in a process. They can be used repeatedly and experience little to no depletion.

Inventing is creating an object for the first time.

Innovating is improving an object that already exists.

Discovering is finding something that existed but was previously unknown.

Craftsmanship involves creating objects with few or many people. These objects are unique because they are handmade with limited tools and tend to be expensive.

Industry involves many people, resulting in identical...

Electronic Components & Electrical Materials

Resistors: Types and Characteristics

Understanding Electrical Resistance

Resistance is the property of a material that hinders the passage of electric current through it.

Ohmic Resistance Explained

Ohmic resistance refers to the resistance of materials where the current is directly proportional to the voltage across them, following Ohm's Law.

Fixed Resistors: Construction & Use

A fixed resistor typically comprises a cylindrical insulating support on which a layer of resistive material, often pulverized charcoal mixed with binder substances, is deposited.

Variable Resistors: Potentiometers & More

A variable resistor, such as a potentiometer, has an ohmic value that varies within certain limits...

Fluid Power Systems: Pneumatic and Hydraulic Control Technology

Technology6.51 KB

Fundamentals of Pneumatic and Hydraulic Control

Pneumatic and hydraulic systems utilize different mediums for control:

  • Electric Control: Uses electrical signals.
  • Pneumatic Control: Uses air pressure (a gas).
  • Hydraulic Control: Uses liquid (typically oil).

Characteristics of Working Fluids

The primary characteristics defining fluid behavior in these systems are pressure and flow.

Note on Fluid Characteristics: Pressure ($P$) and Flow ($Q$) are defined by fundamental physics principles:

  • $P = F / S$ (Pressure equals Force divided by Surface Area)
  • $Q = V / T = S \times \text{displacement} / T$ (Flow rate equals Volume divided by Time)

Components of a Pneumatic System Installation

A complete pneumatic installation includes:

  • Compressor and tank (storage)
  • Conditioning
