Forces and Motion

An outside influence that changes a body's state of rest or motion is called force.

Types of Forces

Normal Force: The force perpendicular to a surface exerted on a body by that surface.

Friction: A force resulting from physical contact between a body and its surroundings, opposing motion.

Gravity: A force proportional to acceleration, attracting objects with mass towards each other.

Fundamental Forces: Gravity, Electromagnetic, Strong Nuclear, and Weak Nuclear.

Newton's Third Law

Also known as the Law of Action and Reaction.

Inertial Reference Frame

A frame where a body moves with constant speed if no force acts on it.

Work and Momentum

Work

A scalar quantity obtained from the product of force and displacement.

Momentum

Define this formula:...

Optical Magnifiers: Principles of Virtual Image Formation

The Lens: Virtual and Augmented Images

Optical Instrument Functionality

An optical instrument is a subjective device designed to provide an enlarged image of small, nearby objects, allowing for better appreciation of their fine details. The accommodative ability of the human eye is limited by its near point (pr) and far point (pp).

Magnification Principles

  • Visual Increase: Provides maximum growth at the near point (pp).
  • Ratio: Defined by the apparent angular size of the image provided by the lens versus the angular size of the object at the near point.
  • Retinal Images: Calculated as the quotient between the sizes of retinal images.

Magnification depends on the focal length (f'), the eye position relative to the magnifying glass, and the object position...

Forms of Energy Transfer

Radiation

A body at a certain temperature transmits energy in the form of electromagnetic waves; the radiation emitted varies according to the absolute temperature of the body.

Black Body

Black body: A body that absorbs all incident radiation and emits the maximum possible radiation for its temperature. It is also known as an ideal body. The amount of energy radiating from a black body is given by the Stefan–Boltzmann law.

Conduction

Conduction: Heat transfer that occurs due to a temperature gradient (dT/ds). The relationship describes the amount of heat transferred per unit area of cross section per unit time. Conduction is more effective in solids and also propagates in liquids and gases.

Convection

Convection: A form of

Physical Phenomena That Launched Quantum Physics

Physical Phenomena That Motivated the Birth of Quantum Physics

Explain TWO different physical phenomena that motivated the birth of quantum physics at the beginning of the 20th century.

1. Atomic Spectra

Classical physics could not explain the discrete lines observed in atomic emission and absorption spectra.

Quantum interpretation by Bohr: Electrons orbit the nucleus in quantized energy levels, and transitions between these levels result in the emission or absorption of photons with specific energies, leading to discrete spectral lines.

2. Black-Body Radiation

Classical physics predicted that a black body would emit infinite energy at short wavelengths (the ultraviolet catastrophe).

Quantum interpretation: Max Planck proposed that energy is quantized...
