Functions of Communication

Communication acts to control the behavior of members in several ways. It fosters motivation by clarifying to employees what to do, provides an outlet for emotional expression, and helps satisfy social needs. Furthermore, it facilitates decision-making.

The Communication Process

The process follows this sequence: Source → Encoding → Channel → Decoding → Receiver.

  • Source: The sender of the message.
  • Message: The actual physical product of the source's encoding.
  • Channel: The medium through which the message travels.
  • Receiver: The person to whom the message is directed.

Sources of Distortion

Distortions can occur at any stage of the process. The message itself, the communication channel, and the receiver are all potential...

Visual Thinking: Enhancing Business Model Canvas Processes

Arts and Humanities2.94 KB

Four Key Processes Enhanced by Visual Thinking

Let’s examine four processes improved by visual thinking:

1. Understand the Essence

  • Visual Grammar: The Business Model Canvas poster is a conceptual map that functions as a visual language with corresponding grammar. It tells you which pieces of information to insert in the model, and where.
  • Capturing the Big Picture: By sketching out all the elements of the Canvas, you immediately give viewers the big picture of a business model. A sketch provides just the right amount of information to allow a viewer to grasp the idea, yet not too much detail to distract them.
  • Seeing Relationships: Understanding a business model requires not only knowing the compositional elements, but also grasping the interdependencies

Velázquez's Masterpieces: Innocent X, Las Hilanderas, and Las Meninas

Arts and Humanities2.81 KB

Portrait of Pope Innocent X

This Baroque oil on canvas, painted around 1650, is a portrait located in Rome. During his second stay in Rome, Velázquez painted the Pope, demonstrating a loose technique and an exceptional ability to represent the psychological features of the sitter. The Pontiff himself recognized this mastery. The painting represents the Pope seated in a chair, dressed in white lace. Different shades of red are spread throughout the composition: in the chair, in the papal chasuble, and in his hat. The Pontiff holds in his hand a sheet of paper containing Velázquez's request. The portrait highlights the natural, incisive, and overwhelming face of Pope Innocent X.

Las Hilanderas (The Spinners or The Fable of Arachne)

This Baroque...

William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience: Symbolism and Themes

Arts and Humanities4.43 KB

William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience: Two Contrary States of the Human Soul

William Blake's initial intention for Songs of Innocence and of Experience was to create a book for children, dedicated to the theme of innocence. The book's frontispiece, a key visual element, depicts an angel and a man holding a pipe or a flute. Two trees frame a gateway through which the man appears to be entering. Interestingly, he is shown seemingly naked, yet also clothed, a visual paradox. This image serves as a representation of the introductory poem, suggesting that the book illuminates the reader, much like the "Children's faces" mentioned in the text. The contrasting attitudes of the woman and the children, highlighting the adult versus child...
