A Life-Changing Summer: Becoming a Swimming Instructor

When I was 17, I took on a summer job as a swimming instructor. I was regularly assigned challenging classes with students who had significant fear of the water or couldn't swim at all. Phonetics and Phonology: Distinctive Features and Vowel Sounds

English2.79 KB

Distinctive Feature Theory

Distinctive Feature Theory challenges Phoneme Theory (PT) by focusing on the features that compose phonemes, rather than the phonemes themselves. This approach questions the validity of the phoneme concept, arguing that speech is not simply a series of discrete sounds.

Natural Class: A set of sounds sharing phonetic features, affected by the same environment, and having the same effect on surrounding sounds.

Major Class Features

  • Vowels: [+SYLLABIC], [+SONORANT], [-CONSONANTAL] - form the syllable nucleus.
  • Glides: [-SYLLABIC], [+SONORANT], [-CONSONANTAL].
  • Sonorant Consonants (nasals and liquids): [+/-SYLLABIC], [+SONORANT], [+CONSONANTAL].

Bohemian Lights: Characters and Social Critique

English3.46 KB

Characters

The town is represented by two characters, generally characterized by archetypes:

  • Max Estrella: The protagonist of this work. A blind, hyperbolic Andalusian poet of odes and madrigals, a humorist, and a lunatic, Maximum Star, known as Mala Estrella in the literary world, embodies the figure of the last bohemian. It is thought that Max is based on the personality of the Andalusian writer and journalist Alejandro Sawa, a friend of Valle-Inclán who inspired the Spanish bohemian movement. Sawa lived in Paris, met Victor Hugo, and died in Madrid, blind and insane, in the worst of miseries. Valle presents him as a classical hero, but despite his intelligence, all doors were closed to him. Max awakens to a strong sense of ironic failure.

Sentence Coordination Types and Structures

English3.2 KB

1. Sentence Coordination

Coordination refers to the syntactic and semantic relationships between independent sentences. These sentences could function independently but are united and not separated by a single point. We refer to this as a compound sentence. The coordinated sentences are at the same syntactic level and are not dependent on each other. Coordinated sentences can appear together in two ways:

  • With Links: Sentences are joined by conjunctions and conjunctive locutions.
  • Juxtaposed (Asyndetic): Sentences are placed side-by-side without conjunctions, with their relationship implied.

1.1. Copulative Coordination

Copulative coordination expresses addition or accumulation between sentences. The coordinated sentences are related by copulative...

Gathering Blue: Summary and Analysis of Chapters 1-8

Summary of Gathering Blue: Chapters 1-8

The story begins with Kira, a girl born with a damaged leg who walks with difficulty. In her community, the weak or disabled are typically abandoned to die in the Field. Following her mother's death, Kira is left alone. According to village rules, she should not survive because she is not considered "strong." Several women in the village, particularly Vandara, demand she be sent to the Field.

The Trial

Kira is brought before the Council of Guardians to determine her fate. During the trial:

  • Vandara accuses her of being useless.
  • Kira defends her right to live.
  • It is revealed that Kira possesses an extraordinary talent for embroidery.

Instead of expelling her, the Council decides that Kira may stay—not out of...
