Types of Studies in Human Behavior Research

To avoid confusion, this text adopts the classification by Dankhe (1986), who divided research into four categories: exploratory, descriptive, correlational, and explanatory. This classification is essential because the research strategy varies depending on the study type. The design, data collection methods, sampling, and other components of the research process differ across these categories. In practice, any study may include elements of more than one of these four types.

Representation of Preferences by Indifference Curves

An indifference curve shows the consumption baskets that yield the same level of satisfaction to the consumer. The consumer is indifferent between various combinations within the indifference curve. The slope at any point on an indifference curve is equal to the rate at which consumers are willing to substitute one good for another. This relationship is called the marginal rate of substitution (MRS). The rate at which a consumer is willing to trade Pepsi for pizza depends on who has more hunger or thirst, which depends in turn on how much pizza and Pepsi they have.

As a consumer prefers a larger quantity of goods, they prefer higher indifference curves to lower ones.

1. Plosion Phenomena

Nasal Plosion

At the junction of plosive consonants [t, d, p, b, k, g] with nasal sonorants [m, n], the articulation of the sonorant starts before the plosive is finished. Consequently, air passes through the nasal cavity instead of the mouth, creating nasal plosion.

Examples: shouldn't, wouldn't, meet my friend.

Lateral Plosion

When a plosive consonant meets a lateral sonorant, the plosion occurs during the sonorant's pronunciation as air escapes along the sides of the lowered tongue. This is lateral plosion.
