Lazarillo and Don Quixote: Spanish Literature Classics

English2.68 KB

Lazarillo de Tormes

Lazarillo de Tormes appeared in 1554 and is anonymous. The work is written in the form of an autobiographical narrative: the rogue, narrator, and protagonist, tells his life in the first person. It consists of a prologue and seven chapters or treatises of unequal length.

In the preface, the autobiographical narrator addresses "Your Worship," a noble and unknown sire, to explain his "case." He decides to tell how his life has been so far. Thus, Lazarillo can be considered a long letter in which the narrator recounts his life to another person.

Plot Summary

Lazarus was born on the banks of the River Tormes in Salamanca, the son of a father who was a thief. While still very young, he entered the service of a blind man, cunning...

A Change of School

Everyone knows that a change of school can be difficult. It doesn't matter why you change schools, it's hard. However, is it really that difficult?

Certainly, there are many advantages. For starters, you can meet new people and experience new customs. In addition, there may be more modern facilities than in your other school. And for this reason, there may be a different way of learning, although this could be a disadvantage, because you are not used to this way of learning.

More disadvantages could be that sometimes you lose contact with your old classmates. And there are new teachers who you have never seen before, and maybe new subjects, too.

Key Quotes and Character Motivation in The Crucible

Analyzing Key Quotes from Arthur Miller's The Crucible

Abigail Williams: Passion, Pretense, and Revenge

"I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men! And now you bid me tear the light out of my eyes? I will not, I cannot! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!"

Abigail Williams utters these words in an Act I conversation with John Proctor, revealing her past affair with him. For Proctor, their relationship belongs firmly to the past; while he may still be attracted to her, he is desperately trying to put the incident behind him. Abigail, on the...

A Conversation at the Louvre

Part 1: The Mona Lisa

A: It is great to be on our own again.

M: Yes.

A: Is this the first time you have been to the Louvre?

M: Uh-huh.

A: What is the matter? Is this about the meeting because I agreed with Jacques and not with you?

M: Yes, well, we knew it would not be easy working together, I mean.

A: It is difficult for me as well. But if I don't agree with you...

M: I know, you are the boss.

A: And I have to do my job. I really thought that Jacques' idea was better. And so did Scarlett.

M: It is not a big deal, Allie. I am fine, really. So, who exactly was the Mona Lisa?

A: I am not sure. I think she was the wife of a banker.

M: Is that why she is smiling? Because her husband has a good salary?

A: I also read somewhere that...
