Understanding Science: The Pursuit of Knowledge

Science is the ordered set of goals through which we acquire knowledge about the world we inhabit. These knowledge objectives relate to the objects themselves, independent of our personal ways of thinking or feeling.

Our current scientific knowledge is vast and diverse. For clarity, it is often divided into several primary fields that study specific aspects of nature:

  • Geology: Studies the composition and structure of the Earth, the changes it has undergone over time, and the characteristics and uses of rocks and minerals.
  • Biology: Studies life and all forms of living things, including how they live, relate to each other, and interact with their environment (e.g., bird migration).
  • Chemistry: Studies the composition and properties of substances and the transformations they undergo (e.g., wood combustion, where wood turns into smoke and ash).
  • Physics: Studies phenomena that alter bodies without changing their fundamental nature (e.g., the varying length of a spring when an object hangs from it).

The Scientific Method

The scientific process relies on a structured approach to understanding natural phenomena:

  • Observation: Carefully examining facts and phenomena that occur in nature and can be perceived by the senses.
  • Hypothesis: Developing a tentative explanation for observed facts and their possible causes.
  • Experimentation: Reproducing and observing an event multiple times while changing circumstances as appropriate. Scientists make multiple measurements of physical quantities to determine relationships between them.
  • Findings: Interpreting observed facts to ensure they align with experimental data.

Laws and Theories

When certain patterns are repeated in all observed events, they may be stated as a scientific law. A scientific law is the mathematical or descriptive formulation of regularities observed in a natural phenomenon. These laws are integrated into scientific theories, which provide a general explanation for a series of observations and interrelated laws.
