Natalia's Journey in La Plaça del Diamant: Love, Loss, and Identity
Natalia's Attitude Towards Life as Colometa
Colometa is a naive, suffering, shy, fragile, and good person who lives life with optimism and a vision of trust. She has a somewhat simple and childish worldview, but she believes that the world is wonderful and good. Because of this, she is in love with everyone around her. She believes everything she is told because, in some way, she was well-educated during a period where women were subject to the command of men, a father figure, and their husbands. Girls were educated so that they would never rebel against men, and their role consisted only of taking care of the children and the house. A woman who was greatly affected by her mother's death, it did indeed cause Colometa to be constantly lost to the world.
Experiences at the End of the Book
In some way, at the end of the book, Colometa has to face feelings and death directly. Because she believed that she was still with Antoni, from that time ago, Colometa greatly valued life. I think that at this point, Colometa realizes that any day, at any time, her little world can end. And that inevitably makes her see life in another color and in a more vital way. Curiously, Colometa returns to her beginnings. While she had not stopped to think and did what she did, she only did what came to her. I think she learned how to make the most of life, to do what you like without worrying about tomorrow, maybe because "tomorrow" does not exist.
Evolution of Natalia-Colometa-Mrs. Natàlia
The protagonist of this novel undergoes a few changes during the evolution of the book:
- However, she is introduced to us as Natàlia.
- Even before meeting Quimet, who will change her name, she becomes Colometa.
- When Quimet dies, Colometa meets Antoni, a grocer, who marries her, and she accepts his request.
- Antoni, who is a wise man, wants her to be called Natàlia.
Here, we could say that the protagonist "returns" to being Mrs. Natàlia, recovering her identity with her name.
Quimet
The protagonist's husband, whom she meets at the Plaça del Diamant, at a party in Gràcia, where they meet and dance a waltz. From here, their friendship continues, their love nest is born, and it fills up. They get married and have two children. Quimet is the only one in love with Natàlia's personality. He is a selfish, cold, jealous man who indirectly makes his wife feel increasingly less free until she goes crazy.
