Understanding Elements of Art: Line, Color, Texture, Shape, Form, Value, Space

Visual arts and art education4.16 KB

Line

Line - is a mark on a surface that describes a shape or outline. It can create texture and can be thick and thin. Types of line can include actual, implied, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and contour lines. (note: Ken does not list 'psychic line' - that was a 'new term' to me)

Color

Color - refers to specific hues and has 3 properties, Chroma, Intensity, and Value. The color wheel is a way of showing the chromatic scale in a circle using all the colors made with the primary triad. Complimentary pairs can produce dull and neutral color. Black and white can be added to produce tints (add white), shades (add black), and tones (add gray).

Texture

Texture - is about surface quality either tactile or visual. Texture can be real or implied by different...

Line Projections in Descriptive Geometry

Oblique Line Projections

For oblique line projections, both the horizontal projection (r1) and the vertical projection (r2) intersect at the reference line (LT).

Frontal Line Projections

A frontal line is straight and parallel to the Vertical Plane (PV). Its horizontal projection (r1) is always parallel to the reference line (LT).

Lines Parallel to the Reference Line (LT)

For lines parallel to the reference line (LT), both horizontal (r1) and vertical (r2) projections are parallel to the LT.

Vertical Line Projections

A vertical line is perpendicular to the Horizontal Plane (PH). Its vertical projection (r2) is perpendicular to the reference line (LT).

Edge View Projections (Perpendicular to PV)

When a straight...

Ancient Egyptian Sculpture: Characteristics and Techniques

Egyptian Sculpture: Materials and Purpose

Drawing upon the geological resources of Egypt, sculptors utilized all kinds of rocks and stones, ranging from the hardest (basalt, granite) to the softer varieties (gypsum, limestone). They were also experts in carving wood (acacia, sycamore) and bronze.

Egyptian sculpture was primarily religious, courtly, and funerary. It involved carving images of gods, often taking animalistic forms. The representation of the pharaohs is frequently repeated; they were presented with their crowns and decorated with the insignia of royalty and other details. Family members and state officials (scribes, priests) were also sculpted.

As a funerary art, sculpture was represented in tombs by a series of images (statues or...

Understanding Focal Length: Wide-Angle, Medium, and Telephoto Lenses

Focal Length: Understanding Wide-Angle, Medium, and Telephoto Lenses

1. Wide-Angle Lenses

Wide-angle lenses capture a wider field of view, but they can distort straight lines near the edges of the frame, making them appear curved outward. Additionally, wide-angle lenses exaggerate depth, making objects in the foreground appear larger and those in the distance appear farther away. As a result, when figures move toward or away from the camera, a wide-angle lens makes them seem to cover ground more rapidly.

2. Medium Lenses

Medium lenses, typically around 50mm in length, aim to avoid noticeable perspective distortion. With a medium lens, horizontal and vertical lines are rendered as straight and perpendicular.

3. Telephoto Lenses

Telephoto lenses have...

Impressionism and Post-Impressionism: Monet and Cézanne Analysis

Visual arts and art education2.23 KB

Impression Sunrise (1872) - Impressionist Style

Set against a hazy background featuring merchant ships with masts and smoky factory chimneys in the port, the sun is represented by a small, round orange orb. It illuminates the quiet marine waters where three small rowboats approach the viewer. In this painting, Monet dispenses with conventional representation, prioritizing the emotions evoked by the direct observation of natural elements over academic detailing and precise object shaping.

The composition is the result of a series of bright, dynamic brushstrokes that capture a fleeting feeling. A faint blue-gray mist dominates the color palette, contrasting with the orange sun and its reflected light. These complementary colors are intentional,...
