Logic Circuits and Starter Motor Diagnostics

Digital Logic Circuits

An encoder is a logic circuit with 2n inputs, where n is the number of outputs. Its main application is to convert input signals, in no apparent order, into binary words to subsequently operate with them.

A decoder is a logic circuit with 2n outputs, where n is the number of inputs. It performs the opposite function of the encoder; for a specific sequence of ones and zeros (input words), it activates a single corresponding output.

A multiplexer is a logic circuit whose function is to channel 2n input signals into a single output line of information.

A demultiplexer channels a single input of information into 2n output lines, based on the combination of selection signals.

Flat Screen Display Technologies: Plasma, Electroluminescent, and Touchscreen

Technology4.74 KB

Flat Screen Electroluminescent Display

This is a type of flat-screen display based on the electroluminescent effect. This effect involves the non-thermal conversion of electric energy into light. Light is generated by striking a phosphorescent material with high-energy electrons.

Benefits:

  • Excellent viewing angle
  • Excellent brightness
  • Quick response

Disadvantages:

  • Low contrast
  • Monochromatic
  • High cost
  • High power consumption

Flat Plasma TV

In flat plasma TVs, light is emitted by a phosphor excited by a plasma discharge of noble gas. This technology involves applying a high voltage between two electrodes, generating a gas discharge. After colliding with a phosphorescent material, light is emitted. The term "plasma" refers to the ionized gas during discharge....

Essential Bicycle Components and Braking Systems

Technology3.54 KB

Bicycle Cranksets and Bottom Brackets

Cranks (Manovellas) are the connecting rods that link the bottom bracket to the pedals. The length of the crank depends on the type of route you intend to ride. A short crank allows for a higher cadence and is suitable for irregular terrain, while longer cranks provide better performance on long, steady stretches. Most mountain bike cranks are made of metal or lightweight steel alloys, though other materials are also available.

The Bottom Bracket

The bottom bracket comprises a central axis that is typically protected and ends with a square taper where the crank is inserted. It is essential to keep the bottom bracket tightly closed to prevent rust (robella). Whenever maintenance or a repair is performed, the...

Automotive Engine Air and Fuel Management Systems Explained

Technology2.01 KB

Air Flow Measurement

The air flow sensor measures the volume of air entering the engine. The ECU uses this data, among other inputs, to calculate the precise amount of fuel to be injected. Its operation is based on measuring the force exerted by the air stream on a palette, which works against a spring mechanism. Air generated by the engine's aspiration passes through the throttle body after being filtered. As it passes through the flow meter, it generates an electrical signal sent to the ECU, which then regulates the fuel injection volume.

Additional Air Device

The additional air valve seals or opens an air duct to provide the necessary air volume during specific engine conditions. During the engine heating phase, the injected fuel volume is...

Automotive Alternator System Repair and Testing

Technology3.15 KB

Components of an Alternator

The alternator is formed by the stator, rotor, diode board, fan, pulley, brushes, and regulator.

Alternator Operation

When the motor turns the rotor within the stator, the rotor's magnetic poles (+ and -) produce a magnetic field, generating a current. Alternatively, this current is sent to a diode pack (+ and -), which converts it into continuous AC. The controller then regulates the electric current produced due to the applied electrical power.

Function of Regulators

The regulating circuit maintains current intensity such that all consumers receive approximately 14V.

  • Excitation Terminal (Exc): Connects to the alternator output (+).
  • Brushes (KE): The brushes feed power into the alternator.

Precautions When Servicing the

Hydraulic Systems: Principles, Fluids, and Components

Technology5.14 KB

Pascal's Principle

Pressure exerted at a point in a liquid mass is transmitted entirely and equally in all directions.

Oleo-hydraulic Fluids

Mineral oils are petroleum-based fluids commonly used in oleo-hydraulic circuits. Their high lubricating power is essential for the proper conservation of mechanical elements and components. However, their flammable nature discourages their use in facilities at risk of fire. In such cases, fire-resistant fluids like phosphate esters and water-in-oil emulsions are preferred.

Oleo-hydraulic Circuit Elements

A typical hydraulic unit consists of a tank, filter, pump, and pressure regulator valves. Distributor valves control the operation of work items. Work items convert hydraulic pressure energy into mechanical...

Breaking Loop Method in Heat Exchanger Networks

  • The Breaking Loop Method is used in Heat Exchanger Network (HEN) design to reduce the total number of heat exchangers.
  • In a Heat Exchanger Network, loops are formed when streams are connected in a closed path.
  • The presence of loops increases the number of exchangers and the overall installation cost.
  • The main objective of the breaking loop method is to achieve the minimum number of heat exchangers.
  • In this method, one heat exchanger from the loop is removed carefully without violating heat balance requirements.
  • After removing one exchanger, heat duties are redistributed among the remaining exchangers in the network.
  • The modified network should still satisfy Minimum Energy Requirement (MER) targets.
  • The

Internal Combustion Engine Ignition and Combustion

Ignition Delay in SI and CI Engines

Ignition Delay in SI Engines

In Spark Ignition (SI) engines, ignition delay (also known as ignition lag) is the time interval between the spark and the start of combustion (the AB phase). This delay depends on several factors, such as temperature, pressure, the air-fuel ratio, and the specific fuel structure.

Ignition Delay in CI Engines

In Compression Ignition (CI) engines, ignition delay is the time interval between the start of fuel injection and the start of combustion (the AC phase). During this period, the fuel undergoes atomization, vaporization, and mixing with air. This process consists of both physical delay and chemical delay.

Factors Affecting Ignition Delay in CI Engines

Ignition delay decreases as...

Metalworking Processes and Sheet Metal Fabrication

Technology2.88 KB

Hot and Cold Working Processes

Hot Working: This involves deforming a metal above its recrystallization temperature. The metal recrystallizes during the process, so it does not get harder or brittle while being worked.

Cold Working: This involves deforming a metal below its recrystallization temperature. This causes "strain hardening," making the metal stronger but also more brittle.

Metal Extrusion and Its Benefits

Extrusion can produce complex cross-sections that are impossible with rolling. It offers high material utilization (very little waste) and good mechanical properties, especially in cold extrusion. This process works for both brittle and ductile materials.

Common Applications of Extrusion

  • Aluminum: Window frames, sliding door tracks, and
