Literary Trends in Late 19th Century Spain

Latin3.19 KB

Naturalism

Naturalism was a drift of Realism in France during the last decades of the 19th century. Its creator was Émile Zola, who presented his theory in works such as The Experimental Novel and Evenings of Médan.

  • Naturalists relied on observation and experimentation.
  • Topics covered were related to marginalization in all its aspects.
  • They were interested in miserable and sad environments, and characters were often marginalized (alcoholics, 'morons', etc.).
  • Technically, the authors' documentation and naturalistic observation were proclaimed by Realism.
  • The writer's attitude toward reality was to be impartial.
  • The end of the novel was moral: the writer aimed to improve society.

Roman and Christian Conquests of the Iberian Peninsula

Latin2.63 KB

The Roman Conquest of the Iberian Peninsula

The Roman conquest of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands occurred in three distinct stages, spanning from 218 BC (the Roman landing in Empúries) to 19 BC (the final subjugation of northern territories).

Stage 1: The Punic Wars and Roman Expansion

Following the First Punic War, Rome expanded into the Iberian Peninsula. In 218 BC, during the Second Punic War, Roman forces led by Scipio landed at Emporion to intercept the Carthaginians, who were commanded by Hannibal.

Stage 2: Resistance and Territorial Consolidation

Abuses by the Roman administration led to constant clashes with indigenous Iberian peoples. The penetration of Roman troops into the interior met fierce resistance:

  • Lusitanian Wars:

Augustus of Prima Porta: Masterpiece of Roman Imperial Art

Latin3.47 KB

Historical Context of the Roman Empire

In the year 753 BC, a settlement was founded that eventually became the capital of one of the world's most mighty empires: Rome. Its origins are sketchy, as history and legend are mixed; its creation is attributed to the brothers Romulus and Remus. Imperial Rome (31 BC – 476 AD) reached a stage where, due to the inability to govern an empire so large, it was chosen to establish a new political system headed by an emperor. From the 5th century, northern barbarian tribes of Europe embarked on the reconquest of these dominions until the year 476 AD, when the last Roman emperor was defeated by the Ostrogoths. Chronologically, we speak of Rome from the year 509 BC, when the Etruscans were expelled, until 476...

Medieval Literature: Origins and Characteristics of Peninsular Poetry

Latin2.93 KB

Medieval Literature

The earliest literary creations include the Jarchas, while Portuguese and Galician poetry flourished through popular and educated forms, such as the cantigas de amigo and cantigas de amor. Epic poetry and the mester de juglaría complete the peninsular landscape.

Alfonso X, the Wise, is credited as the creator of Castilian prose, which achieved literary status in the 14th century with works like El Conde Lucanor by Don Juan Manuel. Parallel to this, the picaresque tradition finds its roots in works like Lazarillo de Tormes. Theater samples are rare, with the Auto de los Reyes Magos being the only significant preserved work.

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer: Romanticism, Influence, and the Rimas

Latin3.39 KB

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer: Life, Works, and Context (1836–1870)

Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836–1870) was a short-lived but intense writer. His works include the Legends (narrations combining costumbrismo prose, fantasy, and mystery) and the Rhymes (poems). The poems appeared sporadically while he lived (between 1857 and 1868), but his friends collected them for the first time in an edition of 1871, shortly after his death. Later, in 1914, another edition appeared, based on Bécquer's own handwritten manuscript, found within his Book of the Sparrows, containing 79 poems and a different arrangement.

Bécquer is situated at a moment of transition from Romanticism to Realism. His themes and sensibility often lead him to be considered a post-romantic

Roman Urbanism, Portraiture & Relief Art

Latin2.35 KB

Roman Urban Planning: Grid System & City Layout

In their new towns, the Romans adopted a grid system. Its origin lay in the structure of a military camp, enabling rapid army movement in any direction. This rational structure functionally distributed space, allowing inhabitants to easily orient themselves and navigate the streets.

The city was structured around two main axes: the decumanus (east-west) and the cardo (north-south). From these two axes, the centuriation or division of parcels developed, with each city block typically containing 100 properties. At the intersection of both axes, the most representative public buildings were located: the forum (a large central square, serving as a meeting and recreation center), and surrounding...
