Mester de Juglaría and Mester de Clerecía

Mester de Juglaría (Minstrelsy)

Mester minstrel: The epic is an aristocratic genre, featuring a hero. Epic poems intended to be objective. The main fact in the oral transmission of an epic poem is the figure of the minstrel. This is supported by scholars like M. Pelayo and M. Pidal. The works are called works of the minstrels and belong to the Mester de Juglaría.

When comparing the minstrel with the troubadour, consider the social category and the author of the poems recited to the public. The epic poem, such as El Cantar de Mio Cid, consists of:

  • A date of the manuscript's author.
  • Division into parts.
  • Characters.
  • The meter of the poem.

Don Juan Manuel, Quevedo, and Lope de Vega: Literary Analysis

Latin2.66 KB

Don Juan Manuel

Don Juan Manuel, a prominent 14th-century Castilian prose writer and nephew of Alfonso X, was deeply involved in political and military conflicts. His notable works include The Book of the Knight and the Squire and The Count Lucanor. The Count Lucanor, his most significant work, blends instruction and entertainment. It comprises 51 examples or stories, complemented by proverbs and a treatise on the soul's salvation. These stories share a common theme: maintaining and increasing honor, wealth, and status. Each follows a narrative pattern: the Count consults Patronio, who responds with a story.

Quevedo

Quevedo, born in Madrid, participated in political intrigues, leading to two imprisonments. He excelled in both poetry and narrative,

Spanish Golden Age Poetry: Góngora, Lope and Quevedo

Latin3.09 KB

Luis de Góngora and His Works

Góngora's works are grouped into two main blocks:

  1. Sonnets, ballads, and letrillas: His romances (ballads) cover various topics, some of which are burlesque. Most of the letrillas are aimed at mocking ladies, beggars, and the desire for riches. He also satirizes various writers like Quevedo and Lope (Francisco de Que-bebe and Félix Lope de Vega). He wrote sonnets on all subjects. In his love sonnets, themes of Petrarchism appear but are intensified; these are not poems expressing a life experience, but rather those that worship female beauty.
  2. Major works: These poems led the Culterano revolution and caused a tremendous scandal at the time due to the great "darkness" of the verses.

Josep Carner: Master of Noucentisme and Catalan Poetry

Latin2.67 KB

Josep Carner and the Noucentisme Movement

The work of Josep Carner (1884-1970) is one of the most important contributions to the Noucentisme movement. The contribution of poetry to the possible realization of an ideal Catalonia is central to his work. While the poet is not an ideologue or a politician, he plays an important role in promoting a certain mood and imaginative truths that help build a country that believes in its potential as a collective.

Language and the Construction of a National Identity

His poetic activity involved hard work surrounding the dignity of the Catalan language. Josep Carner created a noble, refined language that increasingly sought ironic precision and accuracy, moving far away from Modernist literature.

Modernism and the Generation of '98: Spanish Poetry Analysis

Latin3 KB

Poetry XX: Modernism and the Generation of '98

To analyze Spanish poetry from the early twentieth century to the postwar period, we focus on two movements: Modernism and the movement promoted by the poets of the so-called Generation of '98. The poetic movement known as Modernism, introduced in our country by the Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío, developed concurrently with the Generation of '98 during the final years of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (1888–1910).

The Renovation of Spanish Poetry

This movement possessed the ability to completely renovate Spanish poetry, providing the basis for its further development. It arose as a reaction against the realistic spirit of the age, seeking a refinement of form, the perfection of expression,...

Miguel Hernández's Poetic Journey: War, Prison, and Maturity

Miguel Hernández: Poetic Evolution and Themes

The Poet-Soldier and Stylistic Renewal

Miguel Hernández (MH) adopted the role of the "poet-soldier," drawn by war events, filling his images with poetry and the symbolism of hard iron: metallic elements and weapons. Unlike the surreal images found in the poetry of Neruda and Aleixandre, MH focuses on the winds of freedom, represented by peasants, workers, and fighters, as the only way for people to succeed.

At the same time, he carried out a measure of stylistic renewal, utilizing forms such as the smith (?), the décima, the quatrain, the sonnet, Alexandrian romances, and broken serventesios.

Pessimism During the Spanish Civil War

A pessimistic and negative tone lurks, as MH notes the sad and grim...

Postwar Theater and 20th Century American Literature

Latin4.1 KB

The Theater of Postwar (Since 1939)

The theater experienced a general crisis after the war. Authors were scarce and suffered from strict censorship. The public and employers were not willing to embrace innovation, which led to a reduction in drama.

Triumphant Theater

It proposes a clear continuity with dramatic forms and themes from before the Civil War. High comedy is benaventina, does not innovate, and does not have a provision for a clear trend of rupture. It shows humorous theater. The most prominent representatives are Enrique Jardiel Poncela and Miguel Mihura.

Committed Theater

In the late 1940s, with the premiere of Historia de una Escalera by Antonio Buero Vallejo, an inflection occurs in the course of postwar theater. It breaks with the...
