"I wandered lonely as a cloud" - "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" was a lyric poem by William Wordsworth. The poem was inspired by an event on 15 April 1802, in which Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy came across a "long belt" of daffodils. Written sometime between 1804 and 1807, it was first published in 1807.

The speaker says that, wandering like a cloud floating above hills and valleys, he encountered a field of daffodils beside a lake. The dancing, fluttering flowers stretched endlessly along the shore, and though the waves of the lake danced beside the flowers, the daffodils outdid the water in glee. The speaker says that a poet could not help but be happy in such a joyful company of flowers. He says that he stared and stared, but did not...

Intent and Meaning of Don Quixote

Cervantes' main purpose was parody, which is why Don Quixote was read as a comic book during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. However, starting with Romanticism, other qualities of the protagonist were highlighted: his courtly love, yearning for freedom, and pursuit of justice. Consequently, the novel came to represent a defense of high ideals.

Furthermore, Don Quixote is a portrait of the society of its time. Cervantes portrays the beginning of the decline of Spanish political power. It is also a work of literary criticism and theory.

Language and Stylistic Techniques

Regarding the narrative development, Cervantes starts with the literary device of a found manuscript, a trick that allows for the use of...

The Concluding Paragraph

The concluding paragraph is the final part of your essay. Jonathan Swift (1667-1745)

Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland, to an English family with important connections but little wealth. Through the generosity of an uncle, he was educated at Kilkenny Grammar School and then Trinity College in Dublin. Between 1689 and 1699, he worked as a private secretary to a distant kinsman, Sir William Temple, a retired diplomat. There, he received a first-rate education in politics through contact with Temple and many other well-known politicians, learning much about the vice, hypocrisy, intrigues, deception, and corruption in the political world.

Swift is one of the greatest masters of English prose; his sentences are logical, clear, and well-constructed. He is a master satirist who dared to criticize...

Don Quixote: Cervantes' Masterpiece

Genesis

Don Quixote is Cervantes' masterpiece. It consists of two parts: the first was published in 1605 and the second ten years later, in 1615. The first is more spontaneous; it seems written on the fly. The second is much more thought out and responds to a well-laid plan. Both show some structural parallelism. The apocryphal Quixote is very interesting because it reveals the outrage that the publication of the first part of Cervantes would have caused in the circle of Lope de Vega. El Quixote de Avellaneda becomes a spokesman for a noble reaction to the intrusion that the nobility led to the claim of a mere gentleman, like Alonso Quijano, passing as a gentleman.

Therefore, grammar isn't taught explicitly but can be learned from the language input. TPR is a good way to learn vocabulary, especially idiomatic terms. For example: "Put your hands up."
