Echinoderms and Crustaceans: Morphology and Groups

Echinoderm Classes

Class Echinoidea (Sea Urchins)

Class Echinoidea: Present morphology is radially symmetrical, composed of five ambulacral rows of pores through which the ambulacral feet protrude. When the skeleton (test) is examined, these five rows of pores and the interambulacral areas are especially noticeable. Embedded in these areas is a tangle of spines, short or long, which give this group its name. These animals move and bury themselves; their tube feet also allow them to stand on flat surfaces.

Class Holothuroidea (Sea Cucumbers)

Class Holothuroidea: Commonly called sea cucumbers. They have evolved a different solution for life on the seafloor: the body becomes cylindrical and the five...

Biological Systematics, Reproduction Modes and Algal Divisions

Geology6.7 KB

Systematics and Taxonomic Nomenclature

Systematics: The scientific discipline that investigates evolutionary relationships and degrees of kinship among organisms.

Taxonomy: The science responsible for describing, naming, and classifying biological species.

Nomenclatural Types

  • Nomenclatural Type: The permanent reference element (such as a specimen or illustration) associated with a taxon name, regardless of whether it represents typical features of the entire group.
  • Holotype: The single primary specimen designated by the original author of a taxon as the nomenclatural type; as long as it exists, it automatically governs the application of that name.
  • Lectotype: A specimen selected from the original type collection when the author did not designate

Pastizales y Matorrales: Tipología y Mejoras Agronómicas

Geology5.93 KB

Classification and Assessment of Environmental Impacts

Geology2.8 KB

Environmental Impact Definition

Alteration that introduces a human activity into its environment.

Concept of Environment

Part of the environment that interacts with the activity.

Types of Environmental Impact

Environmental impacts are generally classified into five categories:

  1. Impacts of Overexploitation.
  2. Impacts of occupation, processing of space, and/or change in land use.
  3. Impacts of pollution.
  4. Impacts derived from the decline or absence of activity.
  5. Positive impacts.

Impacts of Overexploitation

Renewable Natural Resources

Includes the use of groundwater, surface water, timber extraction, fishing, and hunting.

Extraction of Non-Renewable Natural Resources

Extraction at a rate such that the resources may be exhausted before the emergence of a substitute,...

Natural Gas Fields and Exploration Techniques

Geology2.81 KB

Dry Gas Fields

In these, gas is the main product. These are sites that contain hydrocarbons in the gaseous phase but produce no liquid formed by changes in pressure and temperature. The gas is generated through a process of expansion, similar to what occurs in cylinders, where the amount of gas associated with pressure gives embaçada.

Associated Gas Deposits

The gas produced in oil fields, gas-oil, and condensate is called associated gas, since it is produced jointly with liquid hydrocarbons. The gas generated in dry gas fields is called non-associated gas or free gas, and liquid parts are minimal.

How to Locate a Gas Site

When underground accumulations of oil or natural gas are likely to exist, a series of steps follows to locate the site most...

Microbial Interactions with Inorganic Pollutants and Xenobiotics: Remediation Methods

Geology10.04 KB

Microbial Interactions with Inorganic Pollutants

Microbial interactions with inorganic pollutants: Industrial activity increases microbial interactions, but a harmless product may be contaminated with a toxic end product.

Effects in Mines: Acid Mine Drainage

Coal mines and metal holdings undergo autooxidation of sulfides (S = Fe + H2O), which produces sulfuric acid. Acid rain drainage contaminates aquifers and plants.

Nitrate Transformation by Microbes

Due to excessive fertilizer use in agriculture, nitrate [NO3-] is transformed into toxic masses (NO2- and N2O) through denitrification.

  • NO3- to NO2- reduction produces toxicity in fodder (causing animal death) and vegetables (intoxicating humans).
  • NO2- inhibits Clostridium botulinum.
  • Amines and nitrites

Chronology of the USSR's Nationalities and the 1990–1991 Attempts to Rebuild the Union

Geology12.49 KB

Chronology of the Nationalities of the USSR

1917: Abdication of Tsar Nicholas II. Independence of Ukraine and Transcaucasia. Stalin becomes People's Commissioner for Nationalities.

1918: Creation of the CPSU. Brest-Litovsk Treaty with the Central Powers in World War I: Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine become independent.

1920: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland are independent again. Russia recovers the territories of Belarus and western Ukraine (which Poland had annexed).

30 December 1922: The USSR is created, with 4 federal republics: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Transcaucasia. Lenin dies in 1924.

Fish Classification: Key Orders and Families of Fishes

Geology4.02 KB

Fish Classification: Major Orders and Their Characteristics

Coelacanthiformes (coelacanths) and Ceratodontiformes (lungfish) are among the most ancient lineages. Lepidosireniformes include the South American lungfish.

Ancient and Primitive Fish Orders

  • Polypteriformes: bichirs with fleshy pectoral fins and spiracles; their flap-like fins are crowned with thorns, and their strong jaw structure is more similar to tetrapods than to teleosts. They are found in freshwater habitats in Africa.
  • Acipenseriformes: sturgeons (family Polyodontidae and others).
  • Semionotiformes: one family, Lepisosteidae (gars), with 7 species distributed in 2 genera (Atractosteus and Lepisosteus); Lepisosteus has ganoid scales.
  • Amiiformes: scales with 45 to 50 rays in the dorsal
