Effective Strategies for Teaching English in the Classroom

Lesson 10: Planning for Effective English Instruction

Learning a new language in school differs significantly from other subjects. If you share a mother tongue with your pupils, you have a unique responsibility to consistently use English in the classroom.

Advantages of Shared Language

You possess distinct advantages as a teacher:

  • You come from the same society as your pupils.
  • You understand how their first language can support their English acquisition.

Helping Children Learn and Improve

Using the Mother Tongue

Teachers employ various methods when integrating the mother tongue into lessons:

  • Initial immersion: Some teachers avoid the mother tongue entirely.
  • Strategic support: Others use English primarily, providing explanations in the mother tongue only

Effective CLIL Strategies: Anchoring Knowledge and HOTS

Electronics2.58 KB

Anchoring to Previous Knowledge

Anchoring to previous knowledge is important because learners' prior knowledge is the starting point for building new learning. Existing knowledge consists of content, language, attitudes, opinions, and experiences related to the topic under study.

The relational links are the glue that fixes learning in memory. The CLIL teacher can intensify the learners' brain connections by promoting the activation of the knowledge that the learners already possess.

Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)

The acronym HOTS stands for Higher-Order Thinking Skills. Teachers who ask "higher-order" questions promote learning; these questions require students to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information, rather than simply recalling...

Effective Strategies for Mathematics Education and Learning

Effective Approaches to Mathematics Education

Concrete bases: Turning math into something concrete involves creating recognizable contexts to which children can assign their own meanings. To achieve progress in levels, students must have at their disposal models and tools to establish a link between informal and formal mathematics.

The Importance of Models and Materials

  • Moments for reflection: The teacher must find the right time to include reflection on the specific kind of mathematics being taught.
  • Interactive math lessons: Interaction should be natural in a mathematics classroom.
  • Weaving the threads of learning: Teachers should base their teaching on real-world situations (horizontal mathematization). Conversely, vertical mathematization allows

Drawing and Writing

The Essence of Writing

Writing is the act of communicating through text. When we write, we pour our ideas into words, recording our concepts using a specific key or code known as written language.

Elements of Communication

  • The Sender: The person who wants to convey specific information.
  • The Receiver: The recipient of the message or the information being conducted.
  • The Message: The set of ideas to be conveyed.
  • The Channel: The physical environment or medium that serves as a vehicle for information.
  • The Code: The system of signs or signals familiar to both the sender and the receiver. This includes linguistic codes (oral or written) and non-linguistic codes (visual, auditory, or gestural).

Practical Exercise

Consider a street poster...

Comparing Language Teaching Methodologies: Focus on Form vs. Meaning and TBLT Implementation

Electronics2.68 KB

Focus on Meaning in Language Acquisition

The starting point in Focus on Meaning is not the language, but the learner and learning processes. Lessons with a focus on meaning are purely communicative. It is the learner, not the teacher or textbook writer, who must analyze the L2, including grammar rules, simply from exposure to the input.

Challenges of a Pure Focus on Meaning Approach

There are three primary problems associated with a pure Focus on Meaning approach:

  • A number of studies suggest that older children, adolescents, and adults regularly fail to achieve native-like levels in an L2 because they have lost access to whatever innate abilities they used to learn language in early childhood.
  • Although considerable progress in an L2 is clearly achieved

Mastering Textual Properties: Cohesion, Coherence, and Adaptation

Mastering Textual Properties for Effective Communication

Communicative Adaptation: Linguistic Diversity and Registers

Communicative adaptation requires the knowledge and mastery of linguistic diversity. Language is neither uniform nor homogeneous. Speakers and writers must choose the appropriate dialect form and register for their context.

Criteria for Text Suitability

To check whether a text is suitable, the following criteria must be met:

  • Achieves its intended goal.
  • Appropriate personal treatment (tone).
  • Level of formality maintained consistently throughout the text.
  • Maintenance of the required degree of specificity.

Consistency (Coherence): Processing and Structuring Information

Coherence is the domain of information processing. It dictates what information...

Enhancing Cooperative Learning Through Effective Group Dynamics

Electronics2.74 KB

Cooperative Base Groups: The primary purpose is to give members the support, help, encouragement, and assistance so that each can progress successfully.

The success of cooperation in the classroom is crucially dependent on the nature and organization of group work. Thanks to the well-designed program in which the elements of CLL are implemented carefully, the students have the chance to interact with each other, and they are motivated to increase each other’s learning.

So when we look at a successful group based learning in cooperative learning, we will see:

  • Positive Interdependence
  • Group Formation
  • Individual Accountability
  • Social Skills
  • Structuring and Structures

Positive Interdependence happens when group members realize that their success is linked...

Debunking Misconceptions About Child Language Acquisition

Electronics2.92 KB

Myth 1: Children Learn Second Languages Quickly and Easily

The argument is made that differences in the rate of second language acquisition may reflect psychological and social factors, rather than biological ones that favor child learners. Adolescents and adults perform better than young children under controlled conditions. Teachers should not expect miraculous results from children who are learning English as a Second Language (ESL) in the classroom context.

In fact, it may be more difficult, as young children do not have access to the memory techniques and other strategies that more experienced learners can use in acquiring vocabulary and in learning the grammatical rules of the language.

Myth 2: The Younger the Child, the More Skilled

Differences...

Academic Vocabulary and Writing Skills

When writing an academic paper, one of the most important steps is to have a clear main argument or thesis, which you should develop throughout the paper.

Good academic papers also incorporate information sources, which require you to understand and explain or interpret what you read.

Effective Language Acquisition Strategies for Children

Electronics2.35 KB

Why is it Positive?

  • It is important to make the child see the foreign language as something “
  • Recent theories about acquiring language insist on the fact that the best way to learn a language is
  • The working techniques and the previous knowledge the children had of the subject make it easier for the teacher and the pupils.

Many teachers think this is not a very realistic idea, or think they are not able to do it, or think it is too difficult for the children. However, there are many possible ways to reach integration, as we are going to see now.

Why is it Feasible?

If we compare our work in the language class with the work in other subjects, very often, the content is very similar and the methods to teach are similar.

Graphic Representation of Information
