Understanding Environmental Pollution
Pollution is the presence of any pollutant in the environment.
Environmental Impact
This refers to the set of possible effects on the environment:
- Atmosphere: Impacts from gaseous and solid emissions.
- Hydrosphere: Impacts from the disposal of all types of substances.
- Ground: Impacts from erosion or the discharge of various substances.
- Biosphere: Impacts due to the degradation of ecosystems.
Major Environmental Problems
- Global Warming: Excessive heating of the atmosphere and land surface, primarily due to carbon dioxide. It causes global climate change, melting poles, sea-level rise, loss of biodiversity, extreme weather, and economic disruption.
- Ozone Layer Destruction: Thinning of the ozone layer over Antarctica due to CFCs. This decline increases the risk of skin and eye diseases and mutations caused by ultraviolet rays.
- Acid Rain: Pollution reaches clouds, producing precipitation containing harmful chemicals like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen monoxide, which transform into highly polluting sulfuric and nitric acids, causing significant damage.
Measures to Reduce Air Pollution
- Use renewable energy and clean fuel transportation.
- Utilize public transport.
- Control gas emissions.
- Save energy at all levels and sectors.
- Promote reforestation.
- Promote water purification.
Impacts on the Hydrosphere
Water contamination occurs in two ways:
- Natural: Occurs without human intervention.
- Human Action: Caused by sewage, detergents, agricultural runoff, pesticides, and thermal pollution. Oil spills are a major cause of marine pollution.
Water Treatment and Purification
Water is considered safe when it is odorless, colorless, tasteless, and free of toxic substances and harmful organisms.
- Potabilization: Performed at drinking water treatment plants on natural water sources.
- Depuration: Performed at wastewater treatment plants to treat waste water.
Impacts on the Ground
Soil is contaminated primarily by mining, landfills, industrial installations, and the abuse of fertilizers and herbicides.
- Desertification: Land degradation in drylands resulting from human activities and climatic variations.
- Wildfires: Accelerate erosion and desertification, destroy habitats, and reduce biodiversity, leading to the loss of life.
