Principles of Harmonious Community Living and Urban Civility
Theme 8: Coexistence With Other Citizens
1. Coexistence in the Town
Neighbors share the same space, utilize common facilities, and interact continuously. Among people living together who are not close friends or family, conflicts regarding customs, personalities, and upbringings can easily arise. To make living more pleasant and avoid friction or discomfort, all societies have established rules for conduct.
The word urbanity is derived from the Latin word urbs (city) and refers to the set of behaviors observed to live in society. While rules of etiquette vary by country, they share the same functions:
- Respecting the privacy of others.
- Maintaining hygiene conditions that affect everyone.
- Fostering friendly coexistence.
- Avoiding unpleasant shocks or events.
Shared Spaces
We share space with others constantly. Even when a person is in their own room, they may hear noises made by others or inadvertently disturb them. At home, there are shared areas that require protection and care in all aspects. When these shared spaces are neglected, the quality of life deteriorates, and everyone is harmed.
I Am a Citizen of the World, but a Local Neighbor
We are human beings, members of the human family, and citizens of the world. However, we are also residents of our specific city or village. We are both: world citizens residing in a particular location. We must engage and involve ourselves to build a fairer world for everyone, starting from the place where we live by proposing ways to collaborate on this great task.
The political and administrative organization of a country should serve as an intermediary between human rights and the individual. Its ultimate objective is to facilitate the happiness of citizens. An important part of that political organization is the city administration. Residents elect their municipal representatives to form the municipality and appoint a mayor. Additionally, neighborhood associations are responsible for defending the interests of the district or locality.
