Philanthropy and Frugality: The Lives of Milton and Hetty
Milton Petrie: A Legacy of Generosity
Milton was born in 1902 in New York. Every morning, Milton walked from his New York apartment and bought a newspaper. One morning, the vendor wasn't there. He paid for the hospital and the funeral. He sent cheques to the families of policemen or firemen injured at work. He also sent cheques to a mother who lost five children in a fire, and a beautiful model. Milton helped the policemen because his father was a policeman. He was lucky in business and was married to Carroll. Milton left $150 million to 380 people. He died in 1994 at the age of 92.
Hetty Green: The Witch of Wall Street
Hetty was born in the USA in 1835. Her mother was often ill, so when she was two years old, she went to work with her father. At the age of six, she opened a bank account. She ate in the cheapest restaurants for 15 cents and bought broken cookies. Once, she lost a two-cent stamp and spent the night looking for it. She never bought new clothes. When she died in 1916, she left her children $100 million. Her daughter built a hospital with her money.
