The Outsiders Plot Summary: Ponyboy Curtis's Story
The Conflict Begins: Greasers vs. Socs
Ponyboy Curtis is leaving the movie theater when a group of Socs (Socials, boys from the West Side, the rich area) assault him. He manages to escape thanks to his older brother, Darry, who appears and drives them off.
Meeting Cherry and Marcia
The next day, Ponyboy and his friends go to a drive-in movie theater. They meet two Socs girls, Cherry Valance and Marcia. Ponyboy's friend Dally acts aggressively toward them, but Ponyboy and Johnny treat them kindly. Suddenly, Two-Bit Matthews appears.
When the movie ends, the girls have no way to get home because their boyfriends are drunk, so the guys offer to take them. Johnny and Ponyboy connect very well with the girls, realizing that the rich kids also face problems and have dreams. Near the girls' house, they encounter the girls' boyfriends. To avoid a fight, the girls leave with their own group.
The Fatal Confrontation
Once back in their neighborhood, Ponyboy and his friend Johnny go to an abandoned lot where they like to watch the stars at night. They fall asleep. When Ponyboy returns home, his brother Darry hits him. Ponyboy runs away, finds Johnny, and they decide to sleep in a park.
At the park, the girls' boyfriends assault them. In self-defense, Johnny kills one of the Socs (Bob Sheldon) with a knife. Frightened, they seek help from Dally Winston. Dally tells them to flee to Windrixville, to an abandoned church on top of a hill. He gives them a gun and a wad of cash so they can buy food.
Fleeing to Windrixville
Once at the church, they change their appearance (cutting and bleaching their hair) to evade the police. They buy supplies, although they consist mostly of sweets, which makes Ponyboy feel sick.
The Church Fire and Heroism
Within a week, Dally comes to visit and takes them out to dinner. Upon returning, they find the church on fire because Ponyboy had carelessly dropped a cigarette. A group of schoolchildren is trapped inside. Without thinking, Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally rush in to rescue the children.
They are injured; Johnny and Dally are seriously hurt. They are taken back home by ambulance. They arrive at the hospital where Ponyboy reunites with his family, and the press treats them as heroes.
The Rumble and Tragic Losses
A few days later, a major rumble (fight) is organized between the Socs and the Greasers (kids from the East Side). The stakes are high:
- If the Greasers win, the Socs will leave them alone.
- If the Socs win, things will remain the same.
Ponyboy feels unwell before the fight but tries to conceal it by taking aspirin. The Greasers win the rumble.
Johnny's Death
After the victory, Ponyboy goes to the hospital to see Johnny, whose condition is critical. Johnny dies shortly after Ponyboy enters the room.
Dally's Final Act
When Dally hears the news of Johnny's death, he is devastated. He robs a store and provokes the police into killing him in a shootout.
The Essay: Writing the Story
Afterward, Ponyboy falls ill and spends a week in bed, unable to cope with the deaths of Johnny and Dally. His English teacher, concerned that Ponyboy might fail the course, assigns him to write an essay about his experiences. This essay becomes the book itself.
