Summary of the Book

This narrative is based on the confessions of Nicolás Pertusato, a boy whom fate forces into extraordinary and previously ignored events. Portrayed in the famous painting Las Meninas, this young man recounts his life, struggling to maintain his dignity despite his physical condition, and details his enigmatic relationship with the painter Velázquez, which leads him to undertake a difficult task.

Early Life and Origins

The story begins in Alexandria della Paglia with the birth of Nicolás Pertusato around 1643 or 1644. His father resented him because his mother died during childbirth, resulting in a difficult and sorrowful childhood marked by abuse. Eventually, a man named Acedo takes Nicolás to Spain, leaving his father behind.

Journey to Spain and New Beginnings

During the sea voyage, Nicolás witnesses the abuse of a boy named Jerónimo Rodríguez. He helps pay for the boy's release, and they travel together to Madrid. Upon arrival, Nicolás is placed under the care of a woman named Francisca Guijuelo. While suffering from grief and illness, Nicolás finds a sense of purpose after saving a puppy from drowning, which motivates him to live.

Education and Palace Life

Under the tutelage of Don Alonso Ortiz, Nicolás learns to read, write, and study the verses of Dante, becoming an excellent student. His peers include Ana and Manolillo. Eventually, he becomes a servant to the King, gaining recognition for his intelligence and forming a deep friendship with a girl named Bárbara.

The Connection to Velázquez

Velázquez, a favorite of the King, discovers Nicolás's talent for reciting verses. Impressed, the painter decides to include him in his masterpiece, Las Meninas. After a reunion with Acedo, Nicolás faces the tragedy of the death of Velázquez's wife, Juana. The story concludes with Nicolás at seventeen, receiving a commemorative drawing from Velázquez's son, Juan Bautista, in recognition of his loyal service.
