Characteristics of an Investment

Any investment project involves the immobilization of resources for a long period, in the hope of obtaining income over the duration of the investment. Thus, an investment is characterized by the flow of payments and receipts generated by the company for the duration of the project.

Financial Characteristics of an Investment

  • Disbursement: The amount paid at the time of acquiring the assets.
  • Investment Duration: The number of years during which the project produces cash inflows and outflows, resulting in net cash flows.
  • Quasi-rents: The difference between receipts and payments that the company bears over each period of the investment.

The Informal Organization

The formal company structure is not always able to assume and control the entire range of activities and relationships that may arise between members of the organization. Alongside the formal structure, an informal organization develops. This can arise from various circumstances, but is heavily influenced by the presence of charismatic leaders—workers who are not part of the company management but gather other employees around them.

Key Features of Informal Organizations

  • Spontaneous Origin: It is little or not planned, as connections arise from spontaneous relationships between group members.
  • Strong Bonds: Despite its origin, relations between members can be very strong and durable, often bypassing hierarchical barriers.
  • Information Channel: It serves as an instrument to channel information that formal structures cannot handle. Managers may use it to access information, spread rumors, or study reactions to planned actions.
  • Rumor Mill: It is a structure where rumors are easily born and developed.
  • Flexibility: It is typically a flexible structure subject to change, contrasting with the rigid formal structure of the company.

The informal structure exists to address the needs of individuals within the company that the formal structure fails to meet. An example includes the friendly relations that arise from daily interaction between colleagues.
