Industrial Raw Materials and Global Energy Sources
Classification of Industrial Raw Materials
For industrial products, natural raw materials are required. These are natural raw materials from nature that serve as the basis for industry, classified as follows: animal, plant, and mining-based materials.
Raw Materials of Animal and Plant Origin
- Animal origin: Wool, leather, and livestock are used in the textile and clothing industries. Fishing also provides raw materials for canned goods, oil, and fish meal.
- Plant origin: These come from agriculture and forestry. Cotton is used to make textiles, and wood from forestry is also utilized.
Mining and Mineral Raw Materials
Materials extracted from underground are divided into three categories: metal, energy, and non-metal.
- Metal: Iron ore and metallurgy are the basis of these very important materials.
- Non-metal: Other minerals used in construction, such as granite, are known as non-metallic minerals.
Mining Activities
Mining is the set of activities for mineral extraction. There are two types: extensive open-air and underground. Underground mining is difficult and dangerous, while open-air mining involves broad niches where work must not be interrupted.
Traditional and Alternative Energy Sources
Sources of energy are natural resource groups used to produce energy. They can be classified in two ways:
- Renewability: Whether they can be replenished (renewable) or not (non-renewable).
- Economic Importance: Whether they are traditional or alternative.
Renewable and Non-Renewable Energy
Renewable: Sources such as wind, sun, and water are almost endless. Non-renewable: These may be limited and exhausted, including coal, natural gas, oil, and uranium.
Traditional and Alternative Sources
Traditional: These meet the needs of the population and are commonly used, such as coal, oil, and natural gas. Alternative: These see little use and are still being investigated because exploitation is difficult, such as solar and wind power.
Primary Traditional Energy Sources
Coal
Coal is a mineral fossil fuel generated by decomposing plants. The creation of thermal coal was particularly important and is currently used as a fuel in China, the United States, and European Union countries.
Oil
Oil is a dark, thick, oily liquid generated from the decomposition of plant and animal sources. It is used to generate electricity and for products like paint and plastics. Major producers include Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Russia, the United States, and Venezuela.
Natural Gas
The origin and formation of natural gas are similar to oil. It is increasingly used for human consumption because it is a cleaner fuel. Major producers include Canada, Russia, the United States, and Persian Gulf countries.
Hydropower
Energy is created from water stored in reservoirs. Hydroelectric power plants create electricity; they do not pollute, but they can cause serious damage to the environment. Major producers include Canada, China, and the United States.
Nuclear Energy
Uranium is the source responsible for the electricity needed to power a reactor. This process generates heat but also produces radioactive waste. Major producers include Canada and the United States.
