Forming Tests
There are three primary forming tests:
- Weldability Testing: Reports on the feasibility of welding a specific material.
- Punching/Shearing Test: Indicates whether a material can undergo punching or shearing processes without cracking.
- Forging Test: Measures whether a piece suffers abnormal deformation when subjected to specific force and temperature conditions.
Defect Analysis
Defect trials verify whether a piece contains internal or surface flaws:
- Internal Defects: Detected using electrical, magnetic, or acoustic signals that change abruptly when encountering a flaw.
- Surface Defects: Identified using colored liquids that permeate the material to reveal cracks through visual observation.
Note: Both methods are non-destructive, allowing the pieces to remain functional after analysis.
Metrology in Manufacturing
During the manufacturing process, it is essential to control dimensions and verify that they meet designer specifications. The technique used for this study is called Metrology. Measuring involves comparing an extent against a standard norm using specific device factors:
- Range: The interval between the maximum and minimum scale a device can measure.
- Accuracy: The fidelity with which an indication approaches the true measurement.
- Sensitivity: The maximum variation of magnitude observable in the indicator.
- Tolerance: The maximum allowable interval between the measured value and the real value.
Measurement Errors
Errors are categorized into two types:
- Random Errors: Unavoidable variations that occur because measurements are rarely performed under identical conditions or due to operator limitations.
- Systematic Errors: Constant inaccuracies present in all measurements and calibrations, typically caused by defective equipment or flawed processes.
Systematic errors are not detected by statistical methods because all measurements are incorrect by a constant magnitude. These are prevented through technical monitoring of equipment and measurement processes.
