The digital revolution, including the Internet and ARPANET, is built upon three foundational technological breakthroughs:

The Origins of the Internet

The origins of the Internet date back to 1968 during the Cold War. The U.S. Department of Defense created a research agency with a mandate to develop a system capable of preserving information in the event of a nuclear attack. This led to the creation of ARPANET, which digitized information for transmission via telephone cables.

Initially intended for the military, the system was later made available to the scientific community and universities. When universities began using it for personal communication, the military developed a separate protocol—a precursor to email—to manage their own traffic. Eventually, the name was changed to the Internet.

Network Features

Often referred to as the "information highway," the Internet possesses four basic characteristics:

Unlike traditional media such as television, newspapers, or telephones, the Internet allows for simultaneous, informal interaction with an unlimited number of people. There is no hierarchy; everyone can communicate with everyone else.

Chaos

The Internet is a chaotic system where information does not circulate according to any single standard.

Freedom

The Internet offers the ability to choose. Because there is no hierarchy and information is transmitted horizontally, browsing success depends on individual skill. Users can publish or remove content at will, meaning information is not guaranteed to remain on the network indefinitely. However, an excess of unusual data can lead to an overwhelming experience, potentially causing a rejection of new technologies.

Globalization

The Internet is accessible to anyone, making it impossible to verify the origin of all information.
