Reading as a Cognitive Process
Reading is conceived as a quest for meaning in a text, based on the interests and needs of the reader. It is the ability to recognize, identify, and describe words within the set of expressions that make up a written text.
It is an interactive process through which we decode specific written language. Reading is the most powerful means we have to educate ourselves and learn.
It is a self-directed process because, intentionally, when we read, we do so to distract ourselves, follow directions, or communicate with others. It is an activity characterized by the translation of symbols or letters into words, phrases, and sentences that have meaning for a person.
Reading is an intelligent behavior, and the brain is the center of human intellectual activity and information processing. Reading is interpretation, and attention is focused on meaning. It is one of the basic tools that allows us to acquire knowledge.

Purposes of Reading
- Study and learn: To pass courses and examinations, prepare themes, and deliver presentations or exhibitions.
- Criticism: To teach or comment on a read text.
- Determine historical context: To place a work within a specific time, historical context, or literary trend.
- Pleasure: For personal enjoyment.
- Entertainment: To spend time during leisure or waiting periods.
- Information: The reader looks for information that contributes to applying knowledge in their area of interest.
