Characters of Heart of Darkness

Marlow

Marlow, the main character and narrator, possesses a distinct personality. He dislikes appearing ridiculous, finds ordering others quite indolent, enjoys reading, and holds a profound fascination for specific topics. He contemplates the nature of work and its execution, abhors lies, and harbors great admiration for Mr. Kurtz, whom he has not yet met.

Kurtz

Kurtz is portrayed as a man of exceptional talent, admired by all, which explains Marlow's profound fascination. He is a captivating orator, capable of enthralling audiences globally. He embraces a free life in the jungle, exploring, observing, and living among the indigenous people. His most striking characteristic is his fervent enthusiasm for jungle life, which ultimately reveals a covetous and almost mad ambition.

The Director

The Director is another notable character, characterized by his love for power, his unpleasant nature, and his skill in maintaining appearances. He dislikes competition and is deeply envious of others.

Narrators

The narrative employs two distinct narrators:

  • A crew member on the Nellie, who introduces Marlow.
  • Marlow, who recounts the central story of his journey into the Congo.

The Central Station

Where Marlow's steamboat undergoes repairs before continuing its journey. It is here that he meets the Director and observes the widespread admiration for Kurtz.

The Steamboat

The vessel used for the arduous journey upriver to Kurtz's location. During this voyage, the steamboat is attacked by indigenous people.
