Benito Pérez Galdós: A Master of Spanish Realism

Benito Pérez Galdós, a prominent figure in the realism movement, was born in Las Palmas in 1843 and passed away in Madrid in 1920. He pursued legal studies, served as a deputy, and was a progressive observer of his time. His life spanned a tumultuous era, and his literary output is extensive, categorized as follows:

Romances of Youth or Thesis Novels

These novels champion modern ideas concerning culture and reason, often depicting the clash between liberal and progressive ideologies. Notable works from this period include:

  • La Fontana de Oro
  • Gloria
  • La Familia de León Roch: This novel explores the conflict between Catholic bigotry and liberal tolerance.
  • Marianela: A romantic tale of a young, orphaned, and physically unattractive girl who falls in love with Pablo, a handsome, wealthy boy blind from birth.
  • Miss Perfect: The story of a widowed Doña living with her daughter, Rosario. Their lives are disrupted by the arrival of Pepe Rey, a liberal-minded engineer nephew who clashes with his aunt's traditional views. Rosario and Pepe fall in love, but their relationship is opposed by the mother and the local pastor. Their attempt to elope ends tragically with Pepe's death, leading to Rosario's mental breakdown and institutionalization. The characters initially appear peaceful but gradually become fanatical.

Contemporary Novels

This period includes novels such as:

  • La Desheredada: Which addresses themes of inheritance and social condition.
  • Storm and Rosalía: These works critique excessive ambition, envy, and hypocrisy within the wealthy class.
  • Fortunata and Jacinta: A story of women from different social backgrounds set against the backdrop of contemporary Madrid, offering a rich gallery of characters and a vivid portrayal of Madrid society.
  • Miau: A compelling novel with a seemingly simple plot. It follows a finance official who is dismissed due to political changes.

The National Episodes

This series comprises five sets of ten works each, focusing on Spain's recent history. The series, however, remains unfinished. It covers events from the War of Independence (1873-1875), the reign of Ferdinand VII, the First Carlist War (1898-1900), the era of Isabella II (1901-1907) up to her dethronement (1907-1912), and the period leading to the Restoration.

Spiritual Novels

In these novels, Galdós delves into spiritual themes. Nazarin tells the story of a priest who struggles in a harsh world, unable to reconcile his evangelical ideals with the realities of human suffering. Misericordia is a novel about charity.
