Aloma by Mercè Rodoreda: Plot Summary and Character Analysis
Abstract
Aloma is a young woman living in Barcelona with her brother, his wife, and their child. Her brother is named Joan, his wife is Anna, and their son is Daniel. Aloma and Joan recently lost another brother, also named Daniel, who died in an accident. They reside in a house inherited by Joan and Aloma from their father.
Anna's brother, Robert, arrives from America for a visit, and Joan and Aloma go to the port to meet him. Upon meeting, Aloma immediately falls in love with him. Meanwhile, young Daniel falls ill, and the doctor recommends fresh mountain air; however, due to travel preparations, the trip is delayed.
One day, Aloma and Robert go to the cinema. Upon returning home, Robert kisses her, and Aloma realizes he shares her feelings. Eventually, Anna and Daniel leave for the mountains to stay with friends. Aloma and Robert continue their romance, though Joan remains oblivious. Aloma grows increasingly worried by letters from Anna stating that Daniel's health is not improving. Upon his return, Daniel passes away shortly after.
Following this tragedy, the household faces severe financial hardship, forcing them to vacate the house due to mortgage issues. Aloma asks Robert for financial help, but he refuses. The family moves into an apartment. When the day comes for Robert to return to his city, a heartbroken Aloma reveals she is pregnant. Anna reacts poorly, realizing the child is the son of her brother, Robert. Ultimately, Aloma returns to the old family home, reflects on her past happiness with Daniel, and decides to leave everything behind to start a new life elsewhere.
