Line and Staff Organizational Structure

The structure-functional linear or line and staff model emerged to solve the problems of previous structures by combining authority relations with consultative and technical advice from specialists. While maintaining the hierarchical structure of a linear organization, the staff personnel only perform advisory work and technical support; they cannot give orders or make decisions.

  • Advantages: It maintains the unity of command while allowing the use of specialists to advise various departments.
  • Disadvantages: Decision-making can be slower due to consultations, and staff personnel costs may increase.

Committee Organizational Structure

The committee structure assumes that decisions and responsibility are shared jointly by a group of people. It is often considered a complement to other structures, frequently used in conjunction with the line and staff structure for specific decisions.

  • Advantages: Decisions are made considering all possible angles, and internal coordination is promoted.
  • Disadvantages: It can be slow in making decisions, and sometimes choices are made based on internal interests rather than finding the best alternative.

Matrix Organizational Structure

The matrix structure combines departmentalization by function with a focus on specific projects. It utilizes a double-entry matrix where specialists from different functional departments work together on specific projects.

  • Advantages: Its main strength lies in its flexibility to deal with major projects that require participation from various departments.
  • Disadvantages: The main drawback involves possible coordination problems associated with dual authority.

Multidivisional Organizational Structure

The multidivisional structure involves the creation of several organizational units that operate independently, coordinated by a central executive. These divisions are highly independent organizations, equipped with their own resources, objectives, departments, and media, and they carry their own responsibility. All divisions are coordinated and supported by senior management.

Innovative Modern Organizational Models

The Clover Model

The Clover model is a structure where each "leaf" represents a different segment of the workforce. One leaf consists of a stable core of managers and workers, while other activities are grouped and subcontracted to external companies. It also incorporates flexible employment for temporary workers.

The Network Model

The network model is an open-ended structure formed by the union of industrial, commercial, and financial groups. These entities are interconnected through strategic agreements between the various constituent companies.
