Color Classification and Theory

Colors are generally classified as: Warm (yellow and red) and Cold (blue and green).

Chromatic Scales

Chromatic scales are distinguished in turn as High, Medium, and Low:

  • High Scale: Used when modulating the saturation value and containing a high amount of white.
  • Medium Scale (Saturated): Used when modulations are not far from the pure, saturated color tone.
  • Low Scale: Used when modulating the value and containing a high amount of black (low light).

Polychrome: These are ranges of variations involving two or more colors. The best example of this type of scale is the Rainbow.

Chiaroscuro: Light and Shadow Contrast

The chiaroscuro effect is achieved through the distribution and contrast of light and shadow in a painting...

Fundamental Principles of Light and Color Theory

Visual arts and art education3.47 KB

Properties of Light and the Visible Spectrum

Light consists of multiple wavelengths. The visible spectrum contains wavelengths that are larger than those of X-rays but smaller than microwaves. White light includes all wavelengths of the visible spectrum. Within this spectrum, the red wavelength is less energetic than the violet wavelength. Generally, wavelengths beyond the visible spectrum have less energy than those within the spectrum.

Propagation and Behavior of Light

Light propagates in a straight line. When light interacts with objects, it can behave in several ways: it can be absorbed, transmitted, or reflected.

  • A light ray incident on a red object reflects red wavelengths.
  • A light beam incident perpendicularly on a smooth and opaque object

Color Theory and Light: Fundamentals of Light, Color Mixing, and Shadow

Visual arts and art education3.3 KB

Color Theory and Light

Color is a sensation produced in the brain when light, emitted by a light source or reflected or absorbed by the surface of materials, reaches the eye. Light is electromagnetic energy transmitted in waves. White light contains all the wavelengths of the visible spectrum.

Additive Color Synthesis

Additive synthesis is the sum of all the colored light wavelengths of the spectrum. The primary light colors are red, green, and blue. The secondary colors are yellow, magenta, and cyan. Complementary colors are the mix of one primary and one secondary light color that does not contain the previous one.

Subtractive Color Synthesis

Subtractive synthesis occurs when pigments are mixed. The result of mixing pigments subtracts wavelengths...

Visual Elements: Point, Line and Texture

The point is the smallest visual element. It is a shape and size; this configuration has texture and color as an expressive element. A point can be organized into groups with volume effects and textures.

The line is another basic element of visual expression and is defined as the mark that traces a point across a surface. It produces vertical lines of balance and lifting, while the horizontal produces a visual sensation of calm and relaxation.

Level is defined by its shape, size, color, direction and texture. Contrast, color, size and texture produce overlays and perceptual differences.

Texture is the appearance of a plastic surface: natural texture is present on the surface of elements of nature; structure...
