Music5.46 KB

Opera

Opera (Italian: opera, "work") is a dramatic performance combining sung text and music, featuring soloists, chorus, and orchestra. Its parts include acts, music, and performed pieces such as arias, duets, trios, quartets, solo vocals, and concertante passages (soloist and chorus) on stage. It is a total art form, uniting music, theater, dance, and drama.

Origins: Sixteenth-Century Florence and the Baroque Antecedents

The Florentine Camerata de' Bardi

Humanists, musicians, poets, and intellectuals gathered in late Renaissance Florence under the patronage of Count Giovanni de' Bardi. They discussed how to guide the trends of music and drama. Among them were Caccini, Strozzi, Cavalieri, Galilei, and Ruccini.

Liturgical Sequence: Origins and Formal Structure

Music2.31 KB

1. Sequences

a. Origin of the Term and Liturgical Evolution

The term sequence comes from the Latin sequor, meaning "to follow," due to its position following the Alleluia in the liturgy. A monk of St. Gall, Notker Balbulus, recounted how he invented the sequence when he began writing words beneath certain long melismas to aid in remembering the melody.

Early on, the sequence separated from the liturgical chants and began to flourish as an autonomous form of composition. Hundreds appeared throughout Europe between the X and XIII centuries. There was considerable influence between the sequences and contemporary types of secular music.

Some sequences are close to the form of the hymn; Dies Irae, for example, is one such instance.

Literary Devices: Syllabic Rhythm, Rhyme, and Semantic Resources

Music2.66 KB

Literary Devices and Their Functions

Literary devices are the linguistic means by which an author uses a series of resources to guide the reader in how things are said.

Syllabic Rhythm and Rhyme

Syllabic rhythm is produced by the periodic repetition of the same number of syllables in a series of verses. The sinalefa (when a word ends in a vowel and the next word begins with a vowel, they are counted as one syllable) is a key element. Whether the last word is acute, flat, or proparoxytone affects the syllable count. Rhyming verse involves the periodic repetition of sounds from the last vowel of a verse. If all sounds (vowels and consonants) are repeated, it's a full rhyme; if only vowels are repeated, it's an assonance.

Romanticism in the 19th Century: Characteristics & Origins

Music3.13 KB

Information About Romanticism in the Nineteenth Century

Dates: Romanticism began at the end of the eighteenth century and covered the entire first half of the nineteenth century.

Definition

We define it as a school, movement, and flow. As a school, it had a leader, the French poet Victor Hugo, and had a manifesto in the preface of the book *Cromwell* (a drama). As a school, it was very important in France.

It was a literary and artistic movement, but it could be considered a stream because it washed away everything; it was in all the arts, philosophy, economics, politics, and even life itself.

Origins

The origins are Nordic; it began simultaneously in Germany and England, and immediately spread to France, expanding from there to the rest of Europe....

Neoclassicism

Neoclassicism was an intellectual reaction to the frivolous whims of Rococo. Enlightenment thought triumphed, illustrated by the discovery of Pompeii.

Jazz: Povijest, stilovi i glazbeni sastavi

Music3.36 KB

Sastavi u jazzu

Jazz sviraju dvije vrste sastava:
