Spanish Literature from Neoclassicism to Realism

Latin3.13 KB

The 18th Century: Neoclassicism

Also known as the 18th century, the Age of Reason, or the Enlightenment (Ilustración), this was a time of rationalist spirit and a zeal to create progress. This reform movement, of French origin, sought to transform society and culture through the spread of the Enlightenment. It aimed to illuminate society with the light of reason, moving apart from faith. Absolute monarchs themselves implemented reforms from their position of power through enlightened despotism, whose motto was "everything for the people, but without the people" (todo para el pueblo, pero sin el pueblo).

The great political and social transformation that occurred in this century ended with the French Revolution. During the 18th century, the majority...

Spanish Romanticism: Espronceda and Bécquer Masterpieces

Latin3.54 KB

Spanish Romantic Authors

José de Espronceda: The Exalted Romantic

José de Espronceda is the quintessential representative of Spanish Romanticism. His literary evolution was marked by a liberal spirit, transitioning from Neoclassicism to a more exalted Romanticism. While he is primarily celebrated for his poetry, he also wrote the historical novel Sancho Saldaña.

Major Lyric and Narrative Works

His lyrical production is divided into two main categories:

  • Social and Political Songs: These poems idealize marginalized characters of society. These figures live by their own moral codes and symbolize absolute freedom, as seen in the famous Song of the Pirate.
  • Narrative Poems: This category includes El Diablo Mundo and El Estudiante de Salamanca.

Generation of '98: Spanish Writers, Castilian Landscape and Existential Anxiety

Latin3.97 KB

The Generation of '98:

Some young writers, conscious of the crisis that Spain was experiencing after the loss of its last colonies, abandoned the aesthetic ideas of Modernism and used their works to criticize the injustice and inequality of the caciquismo and to cry out for the regeneration of the country. Their works revolve around a critical and sentimental vision of Spain and their preoccupations.

Vision of Spain

Two features characterize the vision of the Castilian landscape of the Generation of '98:

  • Impressionism: the ability to portray what the writer sees, not only the representative elements.
  • Subjectivism: the writers project their state of mind onto what they describe, turning the landscape into an inner landscape.
