Energy Resources and Resource Management Principles

Classifying and Managing Resources

  • Strategy for Nonrenewable Resources

The best strategy for the use of nonrenewable resources is to use them as little as possible and reserve them for applications where they are irreplaceable.

  • Criteria for Energy Source Classification

The most common criteria for classifying energy sources are their composition and whether they are renewable or nonrenewable.

  • The Finite Nature of Energy Sources

We can say that there is no truly inexhaustible energy source, even when considering time scales far exceeding the maximum lifespan of a living being. For example, astronomers state that the Sun, a middle-aged star, will shine for only a few million more years.

Funcionamiento y Afecciones del Sistema Nervioso Humano

Geology3.22 KB

Drogas: Tolerancia, Dependencia y Abstinencia

Medieval Catalonia: Expansion, Institutions and the Crown of Aragon

Geology9.5 KB

1. The Hegemony of the Counts of Barcelona

The County of Barcelona, under Ramon Borrell and Ramon Berenguer I, won the supreme authority over the Catalan counties and subjected the feudal nobility to the comital authority.

1.1. The Subjection of the Feudal Nobility

Between 1041 and 1059, Ramon Berenguer I and the nobility fought over the counties. Afterwards, he imposed the Pau i Treva (Peace and Truce) and forced the nobles to become his vassals, accepting the feudal authority of the count. In this way, the Catalan counties were gradually converted into a single feudal territory, with the Count of Barcelona at the top.

1.2. Relations with Al-Andalus

After the fall of the Caliphate of Cordoba in 1031, the territory split into small Taifa kingdoms....

The Great War: Origins, Treaty of Versailles and Lasting Impact

Geology5.06 KB

Different Forces and Social Alliances in World War I

Germany's war movements: Germany invaded Belgium and Luxembourg, proposing to invade France, which led to the French and English armies joining the conflict.

Trench Warfare

Trench warfare defined the Western Front. The western front was opened on Tuesday, and Swiss and Astal territory was affected to the north. The Almansa offensive launched the first offensive against France, which resulted in the death of millions and 800,000 dead at Almansa. Italy also entered the war.

The United States Enters the War

The United States entered the war after Russia's abandonment. The U.S. entered the war because of the sinking of the liner Lusitania by a German submarine, which directly affected American interests....

Circulatory System: Structure, Function and Components of Blood

Geology3.35 KB

Circulatory System

Circulation is a continuous movement of fluids through the body. The movements that allow us to transport the nutrients and oxygen we inhale to be distributed to the cells of our organism so they can carry out reactions with metabolic substances that allow us to maintain our vital activity.

The Heart

Heart: The heart is an organ and a muscle that beats. It is an important pump that receives blood from the veins and sends it to the lungs and the rest of the body to be properly oxygenated.

Heart sounds (HS): A special piece of muscle tissue in the right auricle, close to the opening of the vena cava, sets in motion the impulse that triggers cardiac contraction.

Heart Movements (Cardiac Cycle)

  • Atrial systole: The atria contract and

Freud on Group Psychology: Libido, Identification and Crowd Behavior

Geology5.17 KB

Libido and Identification in Society

Social groups hold together through concepts of libido and identification. The great majority of people remain in love with one another in their own ways, either sexualized or sublimated, and this affectionate bond is the basis of identification. Each member identifies with the same leader, and through this shared identification every individual adopts a collective soul, setting aside individual differences and feeling as a group rather than as an isolated individual.

Contagion, Suggestibility and the Crowd

The first common characteristic discovered in crowds is an emotional and intellectual equality among all members. Le Bon attempted to explain this phenomenon through three factors: instinctive behavior,...

Diverse Energy Sources and Sustainable Practices

Geology3.62 KB

Understanding Energy Sources and Power Generation

Thermal Power Stations

  • Advantages: Convert heat energy from fuel into electricity.
  • Disadvantages: Pollutes the environment.

A thermal power station is a large vapor-making machine that drives an electric generator.

Nuclear Energy

  • Advantages: High performance.
  • Disadvantages: Expensive maintenance.

Nuclear energy is obtained through the process of nuclear fission, which involves the division of atomic nuclei. The fission energy is converted into electrical energy.

Solar Energy

  • Advantages: Non-polluting, renewable energy.
  • Disadvantages: Requires a large area, can be very expensive.

Photovoltaic Solar Energy

Photovoltaic solar energy utilizes a photovoltaic cell. It works through the photovoltaic effect using...

Causes of the American and French Revolutions: Enlightenment Ideas, Social Inequality and Economic Crisis

Geology4.32 KB

The Colonies and the Path to Independence

The British colonies in America reached a period of great prosperity during the eighteenth century, thanks to the consolidation of a colonial society. The colonists were British subjects loyal to the Crown, but the taxes the Crown imposed to fund its wars increased tensions (Doc. 3).

  • 1773: The Boston Tea Party protests the sea cargo tax on tea.
  • 1775: The war against Great Britain begins.
  • July 4, 1776: In Philadelphia, the United States declares its independence.

The Ideas Behind the Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence, drafted largely by Thomas Jefferson, rests on three principles:

  1. All men are created equal and possess inalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
  2. Governments

Materials Technology: Wood, Metals, Structures and Construction

Geology5.1 KB

1. Wood

Wood is an abundant natural resource. Its main components are cellulose fibers bound together by lignin, water, resin, acids, salts and pigments. Wood is obtained from trees, and it is transformed into useful products such as sawn or crushed wood, panels and treated boards.

Wood Products and Uses

  • Tables, beds and boards
  • Battens, laths, sheets and moldings

Physical Properties of Wood

The color, texture and density of wood depend on the presence of salts, pigments and resins, as well as the color and orientation of its fibers.

Types of Wood Panels

MDF, chipboard, plywood, blockboard and veneer are the main wood-based panels.

Difference Between MDF and Chipboard

MDF is made from finely crushed wood fibers, while chipboard is made from wood chips...

Residential Water and Gas Installation Systems Explained

Geology2.09 KB

Water and Gas Installation Distribution

Water collected from exterior public supply networks runs through treatment plants to the distribution network. The installation begins at the stopcock, which is the closest point to the main supply, followed by the regulation system and the water meter.

Interior Installation

From each meter, the supply reaches the interior columns of the building. The installation for each dwelling begins with a shut-off valve that feeds the entire gas and water system.

Heating Systems

  • Dry Heating System: Heat is transmitted via heated air through the heater.
  • Hot Water Heating System: Water flows through pipes to radiators, providing heat to the home.
  • Underfloor Heating: Consists of plastic tubes installed under the floor.
...
