The Tell-Tale Heart: Analysis of Poe's Masterpiece

English2.23 KB

The Unreliable Narrator's Confession

An unnamed narrator opens the story by addressing the reader, claiming that he is nervous but not mad. He intends to tell a story in which he defends his sanity while confessing to the murder of an old man. His motivation was neither passion nor greed, but rather a paralyzing fear of the man’s pale blue eye. He insists he is not insane, arguing that his cool, measured actions—though criminal—are not those of a madman.

The Calculated Stalking

Every night, the narrator secretly observed the old man sleeping. In the morning, he would behave as if everything were normal. After a week of this routine, the narrator decided, somewhat randomly, that the time was right to kill the old man.

Adjective Meanings and Functions

Adjectives describe the properties of beings. Some adjectives function to define relationship qualities. Adjectives do not always denote the complete and accurate signification of the noun with which they agree.

Types of Adjective Values

  • Specified Value: Indicates a property that distinguishes the being or object designated by the noun.
  • Explanatory Value: Describes a property of the being or object without intending to distinguish it from others.
  • Ornamental Epithet: A poetic and evocative adjective used for suggestive power.

My Flat and Military Base Life in Caranza, Ferrol, Galicia

English2.84 KB

My Flat in Caranza, Ferrol

I live with my brother in a flat located in Caranza, a district of Ferrol in the north of Galicia. Our flat is in a residential area on the seventh floor.

It is small, featuring a living room, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a bedroom. While I do not have a lot of furniture, I have everything I need.

There is no balcony, but I can see a small park from both the living room and the bedroom. I enjoy living here because it is near my NCO School and it is cheap; I pay 200 per month. However, the flat is quite noisy due to heavy traffic.

My Favorite Room: The Living Room

Located on the seventh floor, the living room is quite large and very bright thanks to two big windows.

Animals, Environment, Tech, and Food: Modern Perspectives

English2.57 KB

Discussion: Animals

The world is home to diverse animals, some dangerous, others peaceful. Many people keep domestic animals or pets for companionship. Sadly, some animals are mistreated or abandoned. Others are exploited for work, often in harmful conditions, like illegal animal fights for gambling.

However, some animals have traditionally worked without harm. Work can be beneficial, providing exercise and preventing anger or nervousness. Animals in circuses, films, or television, trained by specialists, can develop emotionally and learn new skills, though challenging at times. In conclusion, animals can work if it's not harmful, but many are unsuitable for work due to lack of adaptation.

Lives of Influence: Icons of Music, Sport, and Activism

English2.63 KB

Paul McCartney: A Musical Journey

Paul McCartney was born in Liverpool on June 18, 1942. He was raised in the city and educated at The Liverpool Institute, where he excelled more in English literature than in formal music lessons. This fostered a liking for the writings of authors such as:

  • Hardy
  • Wilde
  • Shaw
  • Dylan Thomas
  • Sheridan
  • Shakespeare
  • Chaucer

At the age of fourteen, he wrote his first song, a reflective lament called "I Lost My Little Girl." Eight years later, he returned to a similar rueful theme when he found the words for probably his most-noted song, "Yesterday."

David Beckham: Global Sports Icon

David Beckham is one of Britain's most iconic athletes whose name is also an elite global advertising brand. He was captain of the English national...
