Axis Offensives in Europe, Africa, and Asia (1939-1942)

  • Blitzkrieg Tactics: Germany achieved rapid victories using 'lightning war' strategies.
  • European Occupation: In 1940, Germany occupied Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. However, they were defeated by Britain in the Battle of Britain.
  • Eastern Front: In 1941, Germany attacked the USSR. Soviet forces employed a scorched earth strategy to destroy resources, and the harsh winter halted the German advance on Moscow.
  • Mediterranean and Africa: Axis forces conquered Greece and Crete and defeated the British army in North Africa.
  • Pacific Theater: Japan invaded China and initiated territorial expansion across the Pacific.

Defeat of the Axis in Africa (1942-1943)

  • Battle of El Alamein: In November 1942, British forces decisively defeated the Axis powers.
  • North African Campaign: American troops landed in Morocco and Algeria, advancing toward Tunisia, where German and Italian forces were defeated in 1943.

Allied Advances in Europe (1942-1945)

  • Battle of the Atlantic: The use of aircraft carriers and destroyers by the Allies neutralized the threat from German U-boats.
  • Battle of Stalingrad: The German defeat here marked the beginning of their retreat from the USSR.
  • Italian Campaign: Allied troops landed in Sicily, leading to the conquest of Italy and the execution of Mussolini.
  • Tehran Conference: The 1943 meeting established close cooperation that accelerated the end of the war in Europe.
  • D-Day: On 6 June 1944, Allied troops landed in Normandy.
  • Liberation: Paris was liberated in August, followed by the rest of France in September.
  • Fall of Germany: Advancing from three fronts, the Allies conquered Berlin in May 1945. Hitler committed suicide, and Germany surrendered on 8 May.

Final Allied Advances in Asia and the Pacific (1942-1945)

  • Turning Points: Japan was defeated in the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway (1942). The American landing on Guadalcanal (1942-1943) solidified Allied progress.
  • Naval Dominance: During the 1944 Battle of the Philippine Sea, the majority of Japanese aircraft carriers, ships, and planes were destroyed.
  • Island Hopping: The United States emerged victorious in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa (1945).
  • End of the War: President Harry Truman authorized the use of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Japan formally surrendered in September 1945.
