Marine and Fishing Resources in Venezuela

Characteristics of Venezuelan Seas

Geographical Factors Favoring Importance

  1. Extended continental shelf: Acts as a valuable breeding ground for various marine species of high economic value.
  2. Influence of ocean currents: Provides abundant food (plankton) for large schools of fish.
  3. Shallow areas: Existence of zones with abundant food for fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.

Key Fishing Zones

Eastern Fishery Zone

Location: Extends from the border with Guyana Essequibo to the Unare depression.

Factors Influencing Importance:

  1. The influence of the Atlantic equatorial current, which acts as a nutrient source for fish in the area.
  2. The presence of the Gulf of Cariaco, Gulf of Paria, and Píritu lagoons, which favor species reproduction.
  3. The existence of the Salinas de Araya.
  4. The skill of the coastal population as fishermen and the lack of suitable soils for agriculture.

Central Fishery Zone

Location: Ranges from the Unare depression (limit between Anzoátegui and Miranda) to Chichiriviche (East of Falcón).

Characteristics:

  1. Corresponds to the central section (coastline chain) of the Coastal Range.
  2. It has a relatively narrow continental shelf.
  3. Numerous islands off the coast allow for the location of good fishing areas.
  4. The migration patterns of species have favored their presence.
  5. Abundant species: Snapper, grouper, anchovy, and lisa (mullet).

Western Fishery Zone

Location: Covers almost the entire coasts of Falcón and Zulia, including Lake Maracaibo.

Characteristics:

  1. The wide and shallow littoral platform of the Falcón coast and the Gulf of Venezuela.
  2. Good conditions for aquatic farms in areas such as Lake Maracaibo.
  3. The abundance of food provided by marine currents.
  4. The coastline provides excellent conditions for the installation of ports.
  5. Abundant species: Mullets, groupers, snappers, mackerels, and sea bass.
