1. Difference Between Raw Materials and Premium Materials
A raw material is any substance used for construction. A premium material is obtained from natural facilities and processed for subsequent production methods.
Properties of Materials
- Electromagnetic: Relates to thermal and electrical responses.
- Chemical: Describes how a material reacts to chemical heat.
- Optical: Describes interactions with light.
Mechanical Properties
These describe the behavior of materials under main forces:
- Hardness: Resistance to being scratched.
- Tenacity: Ability not to deform or break.
- Plasticity: Ability to deform and retain a new shape.
- Elasticity: Ability to recover the original shape.
- Ductility: Ability to experience large strains without breaking, often cold-formed into wires.
- Malleability: Ability to undergo plastic deformation without rupture to form sheets.
Classification of Materials
- Mineral: Metals and alloys.
- Biological: Plant and animal origin.
- Synthetic: Polymers, nanotechnology, electrical materials, silicones, intelligent materials, and hybrids.
2. Metals and Alloys
Metals and alloys are materials of mineral origin composed of one or more elements.
- Pure Metal: Formed by a single chemical element.
- Alloy: Formed by more than one chemical element.
Features of Pure Metals
- They are abundant and found in nature as part of minerals.
- They can be processed through casting, welding, forging, and tempering.
- They are good conductors of heat and electricity.
- They possess high mechanical resistance and are easily recycled.
- Drawback: They corrode easily due to oxygen, forming oxides that degrade properties. Painting is often used to prevent corrosion.
Copper
Copper was the first pure metal used by humans. It is abundant, easy to obtain in a nearly pure state, and is a very good electrical conductor. It is highly ductile, malleable, and relatively soft, making it ideal for manufacturing electrical cables.
