Good Life Satisfaction

Life satisfaction is a desire and a matter of intelligence. Priorities lead us to our goals, yet we often fail to realize that fighting for contradictory things makes living well difficult.

The Two Universes of Human Life

  • The Facts: What exists, what we perceive, what we experience, and what science can investigate.
  • Values: What should be, what we deserve, and what regulates our morality.

Good Living and Moral Capacity

Living right is our duty, addressing our specific human ability: moral capacity. This is the power to distinguish between good and evil, between what is and what should be, and between description and moral evaluation.

Defining Moral States

  • Immorality: Acting against awareness of good and evil.
  • Amorality: The absence of moral conscience.
  • Sociology: The study that describes, classifies, and compares moral codes.

Theories of Moral Behavior

Moral Rationalism

A hallmark of human rationality, suggesting that good and evil are ideas that can be known, and this knowledge is the key to moral behavior.

Moral Intellectualism

The conviction that knowledge of the good drives us to do it; those who act badly simply do not know better.

Moral Emotivism

Defends that good and evil are not ideas but feelings, requiring sentimental education.

Spiritualist vs. Materialist Perspectives

The spiritualist view sees moral capacity as a sign of our spiritual condition, while the materialist view argues it stems from nature and evolutionary biology.

The Stages of Moral Development

We progress through stages of behavioral assumption based on experience:

  • Pre-conventional Stage: Respecting conduct patterns based on self-interest to avoid suffering or gain satisfaction.
  • Conventional Stage: Discovering the existence of rules and social norms.
  • Post-conventional Stage: Adopting rules to reach agreements based on general values, allowing for modification to better serve those purposes.
