Molecular Motion and States of Matter
Molecules in a gas are much more widely separated compared to a liquid or a solid, meaning they interact less frequently. Consequently, gas molecules move more freely and randomly than those in a liquid.

- Gases: Particles move at high speeds.
Heat vs. Temperature
Heat is a form of energy measured in Joules (SI units). It depends on the total mass and the speed of particles, representing the total "quantity of hotness" in a system.
Temperature is not energy itself, but is related to the average kinetic energy of a substance's molecules. It depends solely on particle speed and represents the "degree of hotness."
Types of Thermometers
Mercury Thermometers
These use mercury in a glass tube. As temperature increases, the mercury expands and rises, indicating the temperature against a Celsius or Fahrenheit scale.
Alcohol Thermometers
Using ethanol or toluene, these function similarly to mercury thermometers and are commonly used for clinical and outdoor purposes.
Digital Thermometers
These utilize thermistors to sense temperature changes and display the results digitally. They are versatile tools for clinical, food, and outdoor use.
Infrared Thermometers
These devices use infrared sensors to measure temperature and provide a digital readout.
Heat Transfer Mechanisms
Heat is thermal energy transferred between objects due to temperature differences.
Convection
Heat transfer occurs through the physical movement of a heated medium. As a fluid expands and rises, it creates a convection current, distributing heat energy to cooler areas.
Radiation
Heat is transferred via electromagnetic waves. Hot objects emit infrared radiation at the speed of light, such as the heat received from the sun.
Physiological Zero
The temperature of human skin is typically around 32°C. Surroundings at this temperature are known as physiological zero, as they produce no sensation of heat or cold.
