- Hardware: The physical parts of a computer, such as circuits and cables. This term encompasses all component parts studied in this unit.
- Software: The logical part of the computer, including applications, programs, and operating systems. This will be covered in the next unit.
Hardware Components
CPU (Central Processing Unit) or System Unit: The components located inside the computer case. It acts as the brain of the computer, where all information is processed.
Peripherals: All devices connected to the CPU, such as speakers, monitors, and mice.
Main Components of a Computer
- Motherboard
- Processor
- RAM memory
- Hard drive
- Expansion cards
Types of Computer Components
- Electrical Support Components: Provide the energy necessary for all computer components to function correctly.
- Electronic Components: Perform specific tasks.
- Buses and Connectors: Join the different components. The power supply provides the electricity needed by all CPU components.
The motherboard occupies most of the Central Unit and serves as the hub used by the computer to connect and communicate between all major components.
Parts of the Motherboard
- The chipset: A base on which the processor is attached.
- The RAM memory slot: The interface where the RAM module connects to the motherboard.
- PCI slot: The interface where a PCI card connects to the motherboard.
- Input-output connectors: Used to connect input and output peripherals.
- CMOS battery: A battery used to power the motherboard settings.
- Disk drive connectors: Used to connect disk drives (IDE or SATA) to the motherboard.
- BIOS: A memory module where the computer configuration is stored.
The processor is the most important component of the computer. It is an electronic circuit that functions as the Central Processing Unit, controlling all calculations.
The memory allows the computer to save and retrieve information:
- Temporary memory: The most common type is RAM memory modules.
- Permanent memory: Includes flash memory (pen drives, memory cards), magnetic storage (hard disk drives, floppy disks), and optical discs (CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs).
