The Science of Color
The science that studies the nature of color is called chromatography.
White Light and Color Decomposition
Leonardo da Vinci was the first scientist and artist to sense that sunlight, known as white light, is composed of a mixture of various colored lights. Isaac Newton, an 18th-century physicist, conducted the definitive experiments to demonstrate this phenomenon.
Additive Synthesis
The decomposition of white light reveals several colored lights. Additive synthesis is the sum of all colored lights that produce the white light spectrum.
Subtractive Synthesis and Pigments
Pigments are subtractive dyes used to paint, stain, or print. They consist of minerals in the form of colored earth, clay, or oil that, when mixed with a liquid medium, result in paints or dyes. Mixing pigments is known as subtractive synthesis.
Attributes and Qualities of Color
- Tone (Hue): The scientific name given to each color; it is the quality used to identify a specific color.
- Value (Brightness): Represents the degree of lightness or darkness. Clarity is achieved by adding white to a dark tone, while darkness is achieved by adding black. High values occur when white is blended, and low values occur when black is added.
- Saturation: Refers to the degree of purity or intensity of a color. Primary colors are pure and possess the maximum degree of saturation.
Primary and Secondary Colors
Primary colors are the base colors from which all others can be achieved: yellow, cyan, and magenta.
Secondary colors are created by mixing two primary colors:
- Yellow + Cyan = Green
- Yellow + Magenta = Red-Orange
- Magenta + Cyan = Violet
Complementary Colors
Complementary colors are opposites on the color wheel:
- Yellow is complementary to Violet
- Magenta is complementary to Green
- Cyan is complementary to Red-Orange
Chromatic Ranges and Scales
A chromatic range is a scale that orders colors according to specific criteria. Based on their position on the wheel, there are two main ranges: Warm and Cold.
Achromatic and Polychromatic Concepts
- Achromatic Range: Uses only black and white.
- Polychromy: Multicolored images composed of two or more colors with different values and degrees of saturation.
- Monochrome: A single color scheme utilizing different values of white and black.
Color Harmony
- Related Harmony: Uses colors located next to each other on the color wheel (approximately a quarter of the circle).
- Complementary Harmony: Uses ranges contrasted with opposite colors on the color wheel.
- Harmony of Gray: Combines colors with white and black.
- Related Harmony of Gray: Combines colors associated with white and black.
- Complementary Harmony of Gray: Uses complementary colors combined with black and white.
