Tourism: Causes, Types and Major Destinations

Tourism is a travel activity that lasts for a period of 24 hours or more, and it is mainly carried out during leisure time. The modern tourism industry grew largely after World War II, when it experienced a major expansion and became one of the most economically important activities in the world.

Causes of Tourism Growth

  • High standard of living provides more free time and additional income, which allows many people to travel for leisure.
  • In many countries, the standard working week became five days, with paid holidays.
  • Better transport has made travel faster and cheaper, especially with larger vehicles and improved road networks.
  • Simplified passport, border and customs procedures have facilitated travel between countries.
  • Greater investment in tourist infrastructure, such as hotels and facilities.
  • Tourist companies and tourism advertising, which promote destinations.

Types of Tourism

Types of tourism differ according to their purpose and destination. Some examples include:

  • Sun and beach tourism: the most practised form, based on sunny climates, beaches, and the sea.
  • Nautical tourism: based on boats, marinas and sailing along coasts and lakes.
  • Spa tourism: visits to thermal baths and mineral springs.
  • Mountain tourism: based on mountain landscapes, skiing and adventure sports such as climbing, hiking and canoeing.
  • Rural tourism: contact with agricultural life, traditional ecosystems of great value, and visits to agro-tourism museums.
  • Urban tourism: cultural visits to historic cities, including monuments and museums.
  • Religious and business tourism: travel for pilgrimages and for work-related purposes.

Major Tourist Attractions

Many of the world's main tourist attractions are natural and cultural sites, which offer attractive landscapes and heritage.

Europe and Asia

Europe is the main tourism-receiving region in the world. Its main attractions are concentrated on the Mediterranean coast, the Alps, spa resorts, large Atlantic coastal cities and historic city centres.

United States

In the United States, the main attractions are the coasts and large cities of California.

Other Tourist Destinations

Other destinations of lesser importance include parts of Europe, Russia, Poland, and the monumental and cultural heritage of the Americas, including Mexico and the Caribbean, as well as beaches in Asia, India, China and elsewhere.

Developing Countries

In many developing countries, tourism is held back by difficult transport, insufficient infrastructure, insecurity and political instability.
