Social Media's Dual Impact on Young Adults and Teenagers
The Impact of Social Media on Youth
Online social media platforms have gained astounding worldwide growth and popularity, attracting attention from a variety of researchers globally. While all generations have come to embrace the changes social networking has brought about, teenagers and young adults remain the most frequent users of these sites. Research studies consistently reveal that these platforms significantly impact the lives of the youth. When using sites such as Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram, users experience both positive and negative effects.
Key Advantages of Social Networking
Maintaining Global Connections
A significant advantage of social networks is the ability to stay in touch with friends and family from all around the world. You can easily send them a picture or post funny videos on their timeline (or “wall”) for them to see. For example, if your son or daughter is living in the US and has a child whom you rarely see in Austria, a social network like Facebook is wonderful. It allows you to view new photographs and receive important information about your grandchild’s development and childhood.
Major Disadvantages and Risks
Digital Permanence and Privacy Concerns
Perhaps the most significant disadvantage of social networks is that your entire digital life is saved on the internet forever. This means that nothing can be completely removed from the web. If you are active on social networks, everyone can potentially find you. This poses a significant risk of being stalked or targeted by dangerous individuals. They may find out where you live, potentially leading to harm or injury, sometimes for reasons that defy logical explanation.
A Personal Perspective
In my opinion, social networks are fundamentally a very good thing because you have all your friends “around” you, regardless of how far away they are. I use several networks daily and consciously try not to post too much information about my location or future plans. Despite the major disadvantages, I will continue to use platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, as I often need specific pieces of information related to my interests.
