Chapter 3: The Approach to Battle
- What did the youth fear? A sudden assault.
- Pontoon 다리를 건너서 deep forest로 들어감.
- Deep forest로 들어가서 자신들의 knapsacks(작은 배낭)을 벗어던지기 시작함 → veteran의 모습에 가까워짐.
- Veteran과 달랐던 점: 수가 너무 많음. 모자가 너무 새 것임 (their hats were too polished and neat).
- Jim waked Henry up. The regiment moved along, and Henry felt as if he were in a moving box → he never wished to come to the war!
- Why did Henry think that the place wasn’t suitable for the battle? Because its landscape was too beautiful.
- War를 뭐라고 묘사하는가? Red animal, Blood-swollen god
- Forest가 뭐라고 묘사되는가? Cathedral, chapel
- 병사들이 전투 중 무엇을 세우는가? Intrenchment (참호)
- 어떤 사람들은 intrenchment 안에 숨어야 한다고 주장하고, 어떤 사람들은 일어서서 싸워야 한다고 주장함.
- Henry는 아예 나가서 싸우거나, 자신이 꿈꿔왔던 전투가 blue demonstration에 불과함을 인정하고 camp로 돌아가거나, 둘 중에 하나만을 원함. Aimless march는 질색함 (hence this waiting was an ordeal to him).
- 이런 불만을 가진 private들이 많았고, 계속 불평하자 Jim이 들어온 지 얼마나 되었냐고 화를 냄. 그런데 샌드위치를 먹고 풀림 (Jim accepts new environment and circumstance with great coolness).
- 이런 stalemate한 상황이 계속되자, Henry는 차라리 죽었으면 좋겠다고 생각함.
- Wilson은 자기가 이 전투에서 죽을 것이라며 Henry에게 가족에게 전해달라고 Yellow envelope를 건넴.
Chapter 4: Under Attack in the Grove
- Henry는 304th Regiment 소속이다.
- Lieutenant가 손에 총상을 입었으나 대수롭지 않게 여기는 듯하다 (it was as if he had hit his fingers with a tack hammer at home).
- The veterans jeered at the new regiment.
Chapter 5: The Youth's First Defense
- The youth hesitates because he thinks that his rifle isn’t loaded.
- Colonel이 captain보다 아래임. Captain이 Colonel한테 무조건 막으라고 협박함. 그러자 Colonel이 “Wet parrot”같이 regiment를 쪼기 시작함.
- 공격이 시작되고, 머릿속의 잡념이 사라짐 (“He suddenly lost concern for himself, and forgot to look at a menacing fate.”).
- Captain은 이미 죽었고, officer가 지휘하는 중. 장교가 전선에서 이탈한 병사 한 명을 호되게 혼냄. 병사의 손이 떨려 도와줘야 겨우 장전하고 발사함.
- 결국 막아냈고, the youth는 이 난장판 속에서도 nature가 얼마나 tranquil한지에 놀람.
Chapter 6: Enemy Countercharge and Henry's Flight
- Henry는 지난날의 자신의 행동에 대해 굉장히 satisfied 되어 있음. 그런데, “But, of a sudden, cries of amazement broke out along the ranks of the new regiment.”
- Shell들이 다시 날아옴 (war flower 같다고 묘사).
- The regiment = slaves, the war = god. The slaves toiling in the temple of this god began to feel rebellion at his harsh task.
- 적들을 과장(exaggerate)하기 시작함 (on their valor and persistence): “They must be machines of steel.” 결국 겁을 먹고 도망침.
- War를 여기서도 infernal mouths of the war god라고 표현하고 있음.
- 그러면서 싸우는 사람들을 methodical idiots / machine-like fools라고 비웃음.
- 상관의 herald가 타는 말 = Chestnut horse
- 그런데 결국 the regiment가 막아내는 데 성공함.
Chapter 7: Flight into Nature and Rationalization
- The youth는 도망치지 않은 사람들이 바보이고, 자신이 통찰력 있게 행동한 것이라고 생각한다.
- Henry는 죄책감과 전장을 피해서 dark and intricate place를 찾아 도망친다.
- Forest의 arching boughs가 마치 chapel과 같은 분위기를 형성했다.
- Pine cone을 던지자, jovial squirrel이 달아나는 것을 보고 위협이 있을 때 도망(flee)치는 것은 당연한 자연의 이치라고 합리화(justify)한다.
- 그러나 그 숲에서 죽어 있는 병사의 시체를 보고 공포에 질려 도망친다.
Chapter 8: The Spectral Soldier and the Tattered Man
- Crimson roar(전투 소리)를 들음.
- The earth와 the moon이 싸우는 celestial battle 같아서 이를 지켜보려 함.
- 검은 딸기나무(bramble) 덤불이 계속 길을 방해함.
- 죽은 사람들을 보고 이 구역은 dead men의 장소이며 자신은 invader라고 느껴 그곳을 빠져나옴.
- “Five and twenty dead men, baked in a pie.”
- Specter of a soldier (후에 Jim으로 판명됨)와 tattered man을 만남.
- Tattered man이 좋은 전투가 아니었냐고 묻고 Henry는 어디를 다쳤냐고 질문하자, Henry는 옷의 button을 만지작거리며 얼버무림.
Chapter 9: The Red Badge of Courage and Jim's Death
- Tattered man을 피해서 대열의 뒤로 갔으나, 온갖 상처를 입은 부상자들 한가운데에 서게 됨. Henry는 그들의 상처를 red badge of courage라고 부르며 부러워함.
- 그 부상자들(wounds) 중에 유령 같은 한 사람이 유독 눈에 띄었는데, 마치 자신의 무덤을 찾는 것처럼 공허한 눈빛으로 방황함.
- 알고 보니 그 Spectral soldier는 Jim Conklin이었음. Jim은 Henry가 전사한 줄 알았다고 말함.
- “Where the blazes does he get his strength from?”
- Tattered man과 Henry는 마치 mad religion의 추종자처럼 죽어가는 Jim의 뒤를 따라감.
- Jim은 경련과 발작을 일으키며 사망하고, Henry는 Jim이 마치 늑대에 물려 죽은 사람의 모습 같았다고 회상함.
- “The red sun was pasted in the sky like a wafer (영성체).”
Chapter 10: Abandoning the Tattered Man
- “All I want is some pea soup and a good bed!”
- Tattered man은 가족이 있기 때문에 아직 죽을 수 없다고 말함. 그리고 죽더라도 Jim처럼 비참하게 죽지는 않을 것이라고 장담함.
- 죽은 Jim을 남겨두고 Tattered man과 Henry는 길을 가지만, Tattered man은 점차 Tom Jamison을 찾으며 실성해 감.
