Realism

Realism is an artistic movement of the second half of the 19th century that reacts against the excesses of Romanticism, valuing the thorough and accurate observation of reality. Naturalism is a related movement that occurred during the same period, attempting to explain the causes of human behavior by focusing on extreme characters and emphasizing psychological aspects.

Key Characteristics of Realism

The dominant genres are the short story and the novel. The primary features of Realism include:

  • Careful observation of reality
  • Contemporary settings
  • Pre-thesis approach
  • Detailed characterization
  • Omniscient narrator

The style is characterized by sober realism, where dialogues take on great importance.

Representative Authors

Benito Pérez Galdós is the most representative author of Realism, with significant works such as Doña Perfecta, Fortunata and Jacinta, and the National Episodes. Leopoldo Alas 'Clarín' is also notable for his work, La Regenta.

Modernism

Modernism is a literary movement that originated in Spanish-speaking countries and was introduced to Spain by Rubén Darío. Primarily a poetic movement, it emerged in a context where the national consciousness was shaken by the Disaster of '98.

Themes and Style

Modernism was influenced by Romanticism, reflecting both intimate and escapist thematic lines. Modernist poets exploited the possibilities of language, prioritizing musicality in verse. Common meters include the pentameter and the octosyllable.

Notable Modernist Poets

  • Rubén Darío: The initiator of Modernism and responsible for its spread in Spain, he blended poetry and prose, incorporating both ironic and existential themes.
  • Antonio Machado: Characterized by his depth regarding intimacy, memories, and the Castilian landscape. His style avoids complex rhetoric and utilizes popular metric forms. While initially close to Modernism, his later work aligns with the Generation of '98. His best-known works are Campos de Castilla and Soledades.
  • Juan Ramón Jiménez: Known for his relentless pursuit of beauty and a process of poetic purification. His work evolved from sensory-inspired Modernism to an intellectual stage, eventually leading to pure, abstract poetry.
