Raw Materials and Energy Sources: Types and Producers

Geography3.25 KB

Classification of Raw Materials

Raw materials are categorized based on their origin and processing stage:

  • Natural raw materials:
    • Animal origin: wool, milk, and other animal-derived products.
    • Vegetable origin: rubber, cotton, linen, and wood.
    • Mineral origin:
      • Metallic minerals: iron, bauxite, copper, lead, zinc, and nickel.
      • Non-metallic minerals: phosphates, clay, and kaolin.
      • Energy minerals: oil, coal, and uranium.
  • Artificial raw materials: These are intermediate products for the chemical industry, such as rayon, nylon, plastic, and PVC.

Energy Sources and Their Applications

Sources of energy are resources from which the necessary strength is obtained to transform raw materials, move machinery, and facilitate the movement of persons and goods.

Non-Renewable Energy Sources

These come from existing resources within a limited nature and are eventually depleted.

  • Coal: Its origin lies in the accumulation of plant debris. Coal is used as fuel to generate electricity in power stations. Major producers include China, the USA, India, Australia, Russia, and the Republic of South Africa.
  • Oil: Originates from the accumulation of plankton debris on the seabed. When buried in the absence of oxygen and subjected to specific temperature and pressure conditions, it transforms into hydrocarbons. It is used in industry, transport, and electricity production. Major producers are Saudi Arabia, Russia, the USA, Iran, Mexico, Venezuela, and China.
  • Natural Gas: Its origin is related to oil, and it is often found in layers or pockets above oil fields. It is used in various types of factories. The main producers are the Russian Federation, the United States, Canada, the UK, Iran, the Netherlands, Norway, and Algeria.

Renewable Energy Sources

These are natural resources that come from unlimited, non-depleting sources.

  • Hydropower: Consists of generating electricity using the force of a waterfall from a height. Major producers are Canada, Brazil, the USA, China, and the Russian Federation.
  • Solar Power: Comes from harnessing sunlight to generate electricity. Major producers are the USA, Germany, Australia, and Canada.
  • Wind Power: This power uses the force of wind turbines to generate electricity, which can be isolated or grouped in a wind farm. Major producers are Germany, Spain, the USA, and Denmark.
  • Tidal Energy: Based on harnessing the movement of waves and tides to generate electricity in tidal power plants. Major producers are France, the UK, and Canada.
  • Geothermal Energy: Comes from the Earth's internal heat. It is used for heating or to generate electricity. Major producers are the USA, the Philippines, and Mexico.
  • Biomass Energy: Involves the use of organic waste as fuel in industries, for heating, or to produce gas. Major producers are the USA, France, and Sweden.
