Geography of the Pyrenees Foothills

Limits: The foothills encompass all land located south of the Pyrenees and north of the central depression.

Landscape: The region features valleys situated at altitudes ranging from 1,700 to 2,700 meters.

Climate: Characterized by cold temperatures in winter and higher temperatures in summer. Precipitation occurs as snow during the winter months.

Vegetation: The slopes feature white pine forests, while oaks and holm oaks are found in wetlands alongside beech trees.

Coal Resources and Mining Basins

Coal resources are distributed across ten small, separated basins containing different minerals. Lignite basins are located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, specifically around Pobla de Segur, Tremp, Calaf, and Fígols-Tuixent, as well as along the course of the lower Ebro. A number of anthracite coal basins are localized near Pont de Suert.

Environmental Protection and National Parks

The National Park designation represents the highest level of environmental protection. These spaces are intended to be free from human intervention, aside from management activities. Currently, there is only one such park in Catalonia: Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici.

This high mountain area covers a stretch of 10,230 hectares. It was originally created in 1955 and reclassified in 1988 by the Parliament of Catalonia. However, its international scope is not recognized due to the hydroelectric exploitations that exist within its perimeter.

Marine Reserves and Conservation Plans

Marine Reserves

Marine reserves constitute a specifically tailored framework contributing to the organized exploitation of valuable fishing resources. They establish protection measures in specific areas delimited from traditional fishing grounds (caladeros).

PEIN: Plan for Areas of Natural Interest

The PEIN is a plan for areas of natural interest designed to conserve natural heritage and biodiversity. It focuses on improving technical management, forest improvement, and production plans. This plan delimits various types of natural areas and manages protection for categories such as nature reserves, national parks, landscapes, marine reserves, and nature reserves.

SPA and Natura 2000

SPA (Special Protection Area): Dedicated to the protection of birds. This is part of Natura 2000, a European Union project adopted by Catalonia to manage SPAs and SACs (Special Areas of Conservation).

Climate Zones and Regional Biodiversity

Humid Areas

Situated in regions with approximately 700mm of annual rainfall, these areas contain the major water reserves in Andalusia. They feature deciduous vegetation, including forests of oak, pine, and black firs (avetos), under an alpine and subalpine climate.

Dry Areas

Characterized by a scarcity of rainfall (less than 700mm per year), these zones experience dry and warm summers and dry winters. Rainfall is typically concentrated in the fall and spring. Aridity increases from the coast toward the interior. The vegetation is Mediterranean, featuring perennial leaves, white pine, and holm oak (alzina).
