Psycho Plot Summary: Norman Bates and the Motel Murders
The Theft and Marion's Escape
- Marion Crane's lover, Sam Loomis, had to pay all his father’s debts. He only needed to pay another $11,000.
- Marion's boss, Tommy Cassidy, was wearing a cowboy hat. He was an unpleasant, greedy old man who was always talking about money.
- Marion claimed she had a headache, but she secretly wanted to steal money from her boss.
- Because she had stopped her car, she told a policeman that she was very tired.
- She changed her car because she didn’t want to be followed. The same policeman she had seen before was there again, increasing her paranoia.
The Bates Motel
Marion arrived at the Bates Motel, run by Norman Bates.
- She thought Norman was an amusing young man, just like a little boy.
- She noticed a room full of clocks and stuffed birds (taxidermy).
- Marion heard Norman arguing violently with his mother.
The Murder and Norman's Secret
The Identity of "Mother"
When discussing his mother, Norman revealed a disturbing truth:
- She wasn’t a mad woman; she was a dead woman.
- Norman claimed his mother was "ill in the head" because her lover died in a strange way.
- In reality, Norman was insane; he believed his mother was still alive.
The Crime
Norman’s mother (or rather, Norman acting as his mother) was jealous of Marion. She killed Marion with a silver knife in the bath while Marion was having a shower.
The Investigation Begins
A private detective named Arbogast appeared in the story because Marion stole $40,000, and her boss wanted his money back.
- Arbogast realized Marion had stayed at the motel because he saw that the writing on the motel register was the same as on an envelope that belonged to Marion Crane.
- Arbogast wanted to talk to Norman’s mother. He decided not to push Norman, planning to come back later after he had phoned Lila, Marion’s sister.
- When Arbogast returned, he came into the house. He saw a large, silver knife and an old woman flying down towards him, the silver knife in her hand. She brought the knife down straight into Mr. Arbogast’s heart, and he died.
The Truth Revealed
Lila Crane (Marion's sister) and Sam Loomis continued the investigation.
Norman's Deception
- It was explained that Norman’s mother died ten years ago. She killed her lover, then she killed herself. This made it strange: if Norman’s mother was still alive, who was the woman who killed herself ten years ago?
- Norman had hidden his mother’s stuffed body (taxidermy).
- He talked to his dead mother because he was insane.
The Final Search
Lila and Sam made a plan: Lila would talk to Norman’s mother, and Sam would talk to Norman Bates.
They discovered Marion and Arbogast’s dead bodies in a swamp not far from Norman’s motel. Norman thought nobody would find them there.
Lila and Sam needed proof. They went to Room One because that was the room Arbogast said Marion stayed in. Lila found a small piece of paper in the toilet. It was wet, but she could still read something on it. It was the number forty thousand, which confirmed that Marion had been there.
