Product Cost Components and Accounting Classifications
Product Cost Components
Direct Materials Cost (MP): Materials incorporated into the product, identified by the material consumption per unit. Materials that cannot be directly associated are classified as General Manufacturing Costs (CGF) or Overhead Costs (CIP).
Direct Labor (MOD): Labor applied or used for the manufacture of the product, easily identified with the product or service.
Labor Support: Personnel not directly involved in production, such as management and commercialization staff, are included in the indirect costs of production (CIP) for the period.
Production Costs: Comprised of Direct Labor (MOD) and Indirect Labor (MOI).
General Manufacturing Costs (CGF) or Overhead (CIP)
Concepts not classified as MP or MOD, including indirect materials, indirect labor, and other costs necessary for production.
Classification Criteria in Cost Accounting
- Activity Level: Variable or Fixed.
- Application: Direct or Indirect.
- Degree of Control: Controllable or Uncontrollable.
- Time of Calculation: Actual (historical/retrospective) or Standard (prospective/default).
- Decision Making: Relevant, Irrelevant, Opportunity, Sunk, or Differential.
- Production Process: Specific, Individual, Common, or Joint.
- Result Impact: Period or Product.
Cost Behavior and Classification
Variable Costs: Costs that change in proportion to the volume of production or operations. While total variable costs change, unit variable costs remain constant, though they may fluctuate due to purchasing power or learning effects.
Fixed Costs: Costs that do not vary with the volume of production or operations within a relevant range or scale.
Direct Costs: Expenses closely related to the cost object that can be measured and evaluated individually for each unit or group of units produced.
Indirect Costs: Costs not qualified as direct. These are either impossible to measure individually or are not cost-effective to track. Note: The classification of direct versus indirect costs is relative and depends on the specific cost object.
Management and Control
Controllable Costs: Costs subject to regulation by the manager under whose responsibility the cost is identified.
Uncontrollable Costs: Costs that do not meet the criteria for controllable costs.
Calculation Methods
Actual Cost (Historical/Retrospective): Costs based on the consumption and production factors genuinely incurred during the production process.
Standard Cost (Prospective/Default): Costs determined a priori based on the factors necessary for production.
