Metaphysics and the Functions of Religion

Religion responds to the problems of reality and existence by rationally analyzing the metaphysics of religion. It serves two primary functions:

• Establishing communication between human beings and a scope that transcends them, which attempts to explain the mysteries of life.
• Maintaining a social component within the human experience.

Common Traits of the Sacred and the Religious

The religious experience is composed of several common traits:

• Recognition of a transcendent scope: Acknowledging a reality that transcends human life and contingent physical existence.
• The Sacred vs. The Profane: The transcendent area is sacred and separate from the profane, yet it influences it.
• Awe and Admiration: The sacred inspires fear due to its power, joined with an attitude of piety; as a fascinating mystery, it inspires admiration.
• Symbolism: It is expressed through symbols interpreted by a particular social group.

Metaphysical Problems of God and the World

There are three metaphysical problems that rationally address the concept of God:

• The Concept of God: Defined by self-sufficiency, supremacy, and the highest perfection. He exists eternally in Himself.

Rational Proofs for the Existence of God

• Ontological Argument: God is perfect, and there would be an imperfection if He did not exist. According to Anselm, even one who denies His existence has an idea of what He is, stating He is "a being greater than which nothing more perfect can be thought."
• Cosmological Argument: God is the necessary ultimate cause of the universe. This premise is based on the idea that everything that exists has a cause; an infinite regression is logically impossible, so there must be a first cause, which is God.
• Teleological Argument (Purpose): The world requires the existence of a supreme ordering being. The entire universe is an organized cosmos that must be designed by a superior mind, which is God.

The Relationship Between God and the Universe

There are two primary positions regarding the God-world relationship:

• Creation: God is recognized as the creator, but the universe follows its own rules rather than His direct intervention.
• Providence: Following creation, God performs providential work and remains active within the world.

Understanding Atheism and Agnosticism

Atheism asserts that there is no God and that there is no point in discussing religious matters. In contrast, agnosticism states that we can only know what lies within the limits of reason and scientific knowledge; therefore, it neither affirms nor denies the existence of a higher power.
